Nvidia Shield - Accessing subtitles in the "new video player" for the Nvidia Shield app is cumbersome

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 7.27.0.15018

The “new video player” for the Nvidia Shield Plex app requires 9 button presses in order to enable a subtitle and return to the playing video. This is quite a step back compared to the old video player.

Is there any intent to make accessing subtitles easier with the new video player?

I have the 2019 version of the NVIDIA Shield and also find the new PLEX player rather annoying - for reasons like the one mentioned above. The real dealbreaker, however, is the fact that much of my content (around two thirds) start playing with frozen video while the sound is OK. After 5-8 seconds, the video catches up and the rest of the video plays fine. The only real improvements IMO are the lower placement of subtitles and the option to change aspect ratio. However, with the buggy video I have decided to disable the new player completely and revert back to the old one - for now - as it works much more smoothly and begins playback instantly.

What exactly does the “new video player” actually do? Does it playback content better than the original player? Or is it just UI differences?

The user interface for the “new video player” (its name in the Shield’s settings) does look different, but I don’t see any difference in video playback quality (if there is some other improvements I am not aware of, I would be curious as to what those are).

That said, from a UI perspective, it is not good. As noted, 9 button presses are needed just to turn a subtitle on. 9. And when fast-forwarding or rewinding, it doesn’t show you the playback timeline so you have to guess how far you’ve gone.

Given just those 2 issues, it is a unusable in its current form I have therefore disabled it.

As far as I can tell, the main differences (improvements) in the “new player” are 1) lower placement of subtitles (in the old player, the subtitles are displayed relatively far from the bottom) and 2) the option to change aspect ratio (for example to stretch the image to avoid black bars). However, the old player seems much more responsive when it comes to actual playback. As mentioned, most of my content “freeze” for some seconds while audio is fine. This is really annoying and the reason why I’m sticking with the old player for the time being.
