Plex crashing Nvidia Shield when using old player

With new update, plex is crashing when I hit play using the old player. I like the new player, but it messed up the subtitle position on 2.35 movies, leaving them outside the video frame (I have a 2.35 screen).
Please, help.

These are the logs for someone to look at. When I press play, the app closes and go back to Shield main menu. That’s when I use the old player. The new player play fine, but as I said in the previous post, it’s of no use to me when watching a 2.35 movie because I use subtitles and a 2.35 screen and the new player’s bottom position is the bottom of the complete 16:9 screen, not the VIDEO frame, as the old player (and many other players out there).

Thanks.

I have the same issue.

Yep, the old player crashes when I try to play anything in version 8.6 (Shield 2019 tube). I am also only using the old player because of the PGS/SUB image subtitle display issue with the new player.

There have been multiple topics about the subtitle issue and I haven’t seen any response from Plex about it.

Same on a Fire TV Stick 4K

Same here on Shield 2019

Yup, same problem on a Shield 2019 (tube edition). Crashes for me are mostly happening when resuming from playback in progress. But unlike the OP, I hate the new player. There’s way less functionality in it. My favorite feature (time to completion) is gone. The information overlay is gone. Etc. Same complaints as a lot of other folks have made.

Actually, after using it these days out of necessity, I learned to hate it as well. So many little details gone.

I’ve been fiddling around with this a lot over the past couple of days and have some personal observations. I doubt this applies to everyone, but for me, the crashes happen whenever audio transcoding is needed. So the subtitle thing might be related if it needs to be burned in and transcodes audio in the process.

Most of what I have will direct play video, but I have a wide variety of audio tracks and whenever it needs to be converted for playback, I get kicked back out to the Shield home screen. Although sometimes I get kicked back out to the Plex home screen. The very small number of files I have that need video conversion are okay as long as the audio can be direct played.

Just chiming in with a similar situation. Using Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 model, old player crashes to shield home menu. The new player has audio sync issues and occasionally plays video in slow motion, also fails to resume after pausing. Plex seems to get worse each update!

This old player crash is killing me.

  1. Why is no one responding to this here
  2. Just roll back whatever broke it, why is it STILL broken?!
  3. The new player for me at least on Shield creates a weird white ring around everything and clearly looks massively over sharpened
  4. Now implemented some bizarre UI changes that (whilst person opinion) are complete garbage

New player is completely unusable, although to be fair I don’t see anyone else saying the same as me on the artifacts, halos and sharpening. I should take some photos its unbelievable. I honestly don’t know at this point why I continue to pay for my pass. So many posts and no responses from Plex.

I accept this is quite a strong post but the way things are being broken and not fixed, but other changes no one is asking for are clearly able to be worked on… it blows my mind. I’m having to now look for an alternate player / media manager.

There will be no fixes coming to the old player, as we’ve stated previously, all work is now on the new player, and if you’re having issues with the new player, we’d appreciate it if you could list steps to reproduce, logs from the client, and provide a sample file, along with details on your chain (player device/model, AVR/Soundbar, TV).

@DaveBinM
If you are not fixing the old player (which worked just fine until a few weeks ago) where do we then post improvement suggestions for the new player.

There is a handful of annoyances in the new player, that makes me prefer the old player.

Like:

  • In the new player the next track button on the remote doesn’t jump to the next movie when using a playlist or shuffling. Instead it fast forwards, exactly as the right directional button. On the old player the right directional button fast forwards and the next track button jumps to the next movie.
  • In the new player the progress bar is not shown while holding down fast forward. It is in the old player.
  • In the new player I can not see when the movie ends (at what clock, not time remaining). I can in the old player.
  • In the new player the playback info is hidden in the menu, several button clicks away… In the old player I can see it with just one button click.
  • In the new player adjust offset option is not available in the lower left subtitle menu. In the old player it’s available in the subtitle menu.

If you fixed the above issues, I think a lot of people would be more willing to jump to the new player.

The only feature i’m missing in the old player compared to the new, is the option to skip intros and maybe the watch together function (but i haven’t really used it).

And please, restore the subtitles to the bottom of the video frame that is playing, not always the bottom of the 16:9 display. That way we can see the subtitles in 2.35 screens.

Anywhere tagged with #android-tv is fine.

Aside from any UI complaints, are there any technical issues you have with it?

What kinds of subs are these?

SRT, In the old player the subtitles are displayed at the bottom. For example, in a 2.35 movie, the frames is 1920x800 aprox. So the subs are at the bottom of that frame, not the 16:9 display as the new player, making the subtitles outside the 2.35 picture. In PGS, almost always the subs are in the viewing area or handbreak keeps them there.

Could you provide a sample, please?

The subs are lost when using a 2.35 screen when the subs are outside the frame.

I compared with two other players, just to share the datapoints:

Apple TV, iOS, old & new players - subtitles composed inside video, regardless of aspect ratio. (Looks like your first screenshot).

Roku TV - subtitles are composed on the display, ignoring video matting and aspect. For 2.35 on 16:9, subs often straddle the video/letterboxing border. (Looks like your second screenshot.)

I much prefer the second version, the one you don’t like.
