Nvidia SHIELD/Android app SSA/ASS format anime subtitles + transcoding problems

Amazon Fire Stick 4K CruzAzul logging.txt (2.0 MB)
Tried it again with the new build and no luck on the animes with ASS that I tried but noticed the logs saying

[FFmpeg] [ERROR] [ASS][Renderer] Failed to set context as current when rendering.

So maybe there might be an error with that

Is it possible for us, the user, to add fonts to the player’s own internal “library” (like by copying a font file to a certain directory) so if we have fonts we come across often that are not muxxed in files, we can just add it and have it always available device-side?

Sorry about the placement bug, this has been solved;

We should be able to do this, but its unlikely it will be available at launch.

Thanks for the report, this is indeed the problem will investigate.

It’s wonderful to finally enjoy Direct Play with SSA. Thank you so much for these efforts!

I have noticed that typesetting seems to be a little shaky/jittery compared to a player like mpv

I started testing this build since I’m watching anime too. The one bug I seem to be getting is that no subtitles appear if I start the next episode from the play next screen. If I go back to the home screen and start the next episode from there subtitles appear normally.

Using an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019.

Yes, I noticed this last night too. I guess I haven’t been watching many shows on more than one episode at a time since I never saw it before.

On the plus side, I just checked and it looks like this most recent build resolved this issue I had with crashing from viewing the show page for one-season shows.

Hello, tried latest build on shield and chromecast with google tv. No subtitles still =( But there is this lines in log:

07-31 20:39:54.196 w: [ASS] Missing renderer address, can't start renderer yet.

Looking at the logs it doesn’t appear like the video you are attempting to play has any subtitles.

Thanks for reporting, looking into this as well as the Amazon Fire TV 4K issue, will hopefully have a resolution for both this week.

Are you playing on a SHIELD TV device? I think it’s happening due to the performance, MPV has a lot more resources to play with compared to the limits of Android.

Still looking into this, but haven’t been able to replicate yet. Do you know where abouts in the file, the subtitles end up disappearing?

No I was playing it on my mobile device and when I said compared to a player like mpv I was talking about mpv on android
the file plays fine on mpv android.

Sorry I was referring to the limits of Java rather than the use of Android, however there is performance improvements in the latest libass which we aren’t yet using. Hopefully the update will improve performance, if not there will be more optimisations in the future.

Thanks, I should of checked your previous message.

But it is.

And Kodi with Plex Connect add-on plays it perfectly.

Since they are external Substation/ASS subtitles, I’m actually not surprised. Those haven’t worked in years even on the normal (stable) client.

And they still don’t work now on 9.4.1.33413.

Yeah. External subs is just not working properly. Luckily embedded subs is the most common.

anyone else having an issue downloading any of these links? i get a 404 file not found for each one i try

Could you share the external ASS file with me? They should be working correctly!

Of course!

It seems I don’t have the best timing with this getting buried underneath other replies lol. But if you could take a look when you have the time it would be great.
