I guess I still have the latest uploads ( Armv7aGooglePlay and Armv7aAmazon). If you haven’t got any yet, I can give you.
I’ve sent you PM with links from my Gdrive.
Latest build, includes fixes for disappearing subtitles and improved support for mobile devices where subtitles might have disappeared.
Experiencing a previous bug again with the newest build that had been fixed. Though more infrequent. Subtitles not displaying and requiring me to deselect them and reselect them. Though occasionally it works without issue and other times doesn’t.

This issue hasn’t been fixed
Also…any word regarding this issue cuz it also occurs on the TV
Does this include VOBSUB subtitles rendering too low on the screen?
This version causes ASS subtitles to appear slightly blurry. Tested across every ASS content I have (anime), doesn’t happen when transcoding. Using Shield Pro 2019
Could you take a screenshot to show how they appearing? They shouldnt be blurry as the rendering hasnt been changed since the previous builds.
This build only adds ASS subtitle support.
From what I’ve seen and compared, the size is correct and matches other platforms when a screenshot of both platforms is overlaid on top of each other. ASS subtitles render over the video and take up as much space as the video does, so if the video is more letterboxed or smaller on a certain setup, then the subtitles will be rendered smaller.
Will take a look at this and see if I can replicate. Which device are you seeing this issue on?
Rechecking this again, and something does appear off. Will dig into it and see if I can figure out whats different.
While taking the screenshot, I realized - the ASS subtitles get upscaled which is why they appear blurry during direct play!
For example, this is Plex on my Windows PC (mpv player I guess) - playing in a 1080p window: https://i.imgur.com/fMGsX6T.jpeg
And this is on the NVIDIA Shield - playing at 4k: https://i.imgur.com/8sCYAnM.jpeg
At first, I thought it might be intentional, but when I play the same content in fullscreen on my Windows PC - the subtitles appear to be just fine, and are being rendered natively rather than being upscaled (and therefore looking blurry): https://i.imgur.com/CSxeCGj.jpeg
It seems that when watching transcoded content, the subtitles appear just like they do on my desktop - they aren’t blurry even though the 1080p content is being displayed on a 4k TV.
Another issue I noticed with this build is that when going between episodes, the subtitles won’t show up. You have to disable them and enable them, or exit the Plex app.
Interesting find, that kind of makes sense as Android UI only supports 1080p, everything is upscaled from there except for video which by passes the upscale.
Can you replicate the issue by playing 4K with ASS and then send me the logs?
I’m facing this issue on my mobile device and it also occurs on Android TV but instead of continuing to play the video without subtitles it keeps buffering after reaching a certain point. I’m only facing this issue with this file
Yup something is off
Burnt-in subtitles
Direct play
As in… 1080p content on a 4K screen? If so, sure. Here’s the logs from the moment I started the app and enabled network logging.
plex_atv.log (296.0 KB)
If I actually need to play 4k content with ASS, let me know and I’ll figure it out. It’s just that my current library is entirely 1080p.
One other oddity I found is that subtitles appear and disappear with a slight delay compared to the Windows app (mpv) or when transcoding. I think the delay is between 1 to 3 frames. It’s not very noticeable but if you try to notice it, you do
Ah okay, i thought you only saw the issue when playing 4K content with ASS subtitles, but sounds like you meant playing 1080p with ASS subtitles on a 4K display. I oddly can’t replicate the issue here, and I imagine its due to the upscaling being done either by Android or your TV device. Do you have your device set to upscale in the system settings or do you rely on your TV to do it?
My device does upscaling. However when I watch transcoded content, or using the version of Plex from the play store with subtitles that are already supported (like PGS) then they render fine
.
Still having issues with no ASS subtitles showing on my Amazon Fire Stick 4k but on my Andriod TV it works flawlessly
This build will render at 4K when playing on the SHIELD connected to a 4K display, also includes some other improvements where the subtitles disappear.
Could you try the build above and let me know if it’s working for you? I’m unable to replicate on my FireTV as it’s working as it should, if it’s still a problem please share the app logs with me and I will take a look.
This should be fixed in the build above as well.
This one is a weird one, I investigated and we are doing the correct thing with sizes on Android, however I noticed these subtitles are trying to use a font that doesn’t exist in the video so it falls back on using the font Arial, and Arial does not exist on Android (and it’s not something we can include as it’s proprietary). Instead of using Arial, it’s using DroidSans which is slightly different.
@sixones I shared the subtitle files around a week ago in this reply. Were you able to re-create the issue? I also checked in the build that was posted today and the issue still happens.
The issue still persists…the subtitles disappear around 01:50 mark and in some instances the positioning of the subtitles seems to be off..appearing on the right side.
