Hello, I’m having lots of trouble with the Plex Client app on Nvidia Shield.
This is a 2017 NVIDIA shield Pro (with 500Gb internal drive) running Android 9.2.0 (33.2.0.302). Library is on a NAS mounted to the Shield.
Plex Media Server (version 1.41.6.9685-d301f511a) works very good with the rest of devices in the house. No problems to play media.
Plex Client App (version 10.26.1.123) on Nvidia Shield keeps crashing when I open it… It takes very long to open, then when you start browsing almost 4 out of 5 times it freezes and closes. Sometimes it crashes even before browsing.
I’ve already tried removing all the free services from Plex as I saw in other posts there was a potential issue there. That might have helped just a tiny bit (now it crashes 3/5 times).
I tried checking the logs in the Android folder but I only see logs for the Plex Media Server. Where can I find the logs for the Client app?
Any suggestions or configuration that needs to be turned On/Off on Nvidia Shield to make the app work?
Could I downoad it on the PC first, transfer it to the Shield hard drive.
Uninstall updates. Browse files in Shield and execute the APK downloaded? Do I need to execute it with Downloader app?
Same deal. Installed it. Then Plex Client app froze after linking it to my account using the cellphone (plex.tv/link + code on screen).
Opened it again, took a while and it asked to select the media folders to include in home screen. Didn’t get to add or remove anything, it closed.
After that, it opened with the home screen and the media folders already there, but the app closed on the next 2 attempts before I even got to select anything or browse.
Just in case checked under web access to server and it recognizes this new session is under version 10.26.0.2578.
I’ve noticed it getting worse over the past week even on 10.26.0.2578 – but far better than the 10-20 repeat failures of the new experience player. I removed updates, cleared data, restarted, reinstalled. Not sure if that would solve anything for you, but that seemed to be something solid for me.
I tried again but this time following your suggestion. Removed updates, cleared cache and storage. Reboot. Install the version you shared. Same result, still the client app freezes and closes after startup.
After that, there was a system update to Shield. Installed that one and then tried it again. Same result.
I even repeated the same but after reboot I updated the app via Play Store and installed the “latest” version available. Still freezes and crashes.
How can I access the logs for the client app to try to understand why it crashes?
I looked up the Shield folders and can’t find any log other than the Plex Media Server, but I believe there’s nothing there as of why the Plex Client app crashes, right?
"type": "log:message",
"level": 1,
"message": "[Connections] [Loopback] is unavailable at http://127.0.0.1:32400/media/providers (Status 0)",
"time": "2025-05-08T14:16:46.571Z"
So Shield is Plex Media Server so, is the Client app on Shield not being able to access the serve rand that’s why is trying to access it remotely? How can I make the client app to access the server in the same network (or device!)?
Who new?! Looking at other posts in the forum about the “Enable local network discovery (GDM)” option. By default it was unchecked on my Server. Added the check to enable it and not only the Client app opened up quick as it should… the client app on Nvidia Shield does not close at the start.
So far other client apps work normally so I guess it all got sorted.
I’m glad it’s working for you… but this isn’t an actual solution. I have a Shield on a VLAN (10.100.0.0/24) and my server is on a different VLAN (10.254.0.0/24). Local network discovery won’t find the server due to the subnet difference. Something is fundamentally broken in this player build.
Just adding my 2 cents on this. I followed the instructions and downgraded without much difference (constantly crashing shortly after linking my account and crashing constantly after that).
My setup is a separate PC with NAS acting as the plex server, so I was disabling the Plex Server option during initial setup each time. Tried once with Shield Plex Server enabled, and has been MUCH more stable since then. So far I’ve cycled in-and-out of Plex on the Shield 6 times without issues…!
