Nvidia shield Plex app is hard-crashing on 99% of playback, tested on diff devices in diff states

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7195 (Windows 10)
Player Version#: 9.26.0.2648

My Uncle called me and I’ve been on the phone with him for the past hour trying to help. Any time he goes to anything on his nvidia shield, the plex app crashes him back to the home screen immediately. I checked server logs as he tried to play something, and nothing significant showed. I had him enable network logging, and nothing significant showed. Everything is completely normal and then the log just ends where the crash is, it’s like it doesn’t even have time to write anything.

To try and help, I went to my shield and, surprise, the same thing is happening - instant crash when browsing to an item. I uninstalled updates and went back to a VERY old version of Plex, with a VERY ancient UI, and things played fine. I reinstalled the latest update from the Play Store to the Shield, and the crashing came back.

I don’t have any logs to provide because - and please trust me on this - they literally show nothing, not on the server nor the client.

If any of you have a shield, please test yourself and let me know if it’s happening to you - make sure you’re on the latest version of plex available for the shield (in the US, at least), go to your home screen, and click a TV show from recently added (it crashes there 100%; other things sometimes play maybe 1% of the time).

I also had him play from other devices in his home, and it worked fine. Similarly, other devices in my home play fine. It’s specific to the shields.

This may be happening on other devices too:

Have the same issue on my Shield TV. App crashed in the middle of a movie and now whenever I try to open any item the app crashes. Tried clearing cache and data, issue persists.

Like I said in the OP, if you have a shield that came with Plex pre-installed you can go to settings, apps, and uninstall updates for Plex. It will let you watch content again, but will look like doodoo.

Either way, they severely messed something up somewhere. Glad it’s not just me, I guess.

I’m having the exact same issue. Both of my Nvidia Shields (2015 & 2019 Pro) as well as the Plex app on my Android (Pixel 6 Pro). It works fine in the browser & the app on Windows 11.

Thought it may be my server at first so I went through troubleshooting & reinstalling the docker container (on unRAID). But it looks like it’s isolated to the Android app (TV & mobile).

Glad to know it’s not just me & my devices, but hopefully they fix this soon!

Same issue here. Android App on 4 different devices, Android/Google TV App. ANYTHING WITH ANDROID.

Everyone open a support ticket so this gets resolved quickly hopefully

I just logged out and back in and it started working.

i tried that already and reinstalled Plex altogether. nothing yet.

It worked on one shield but not another. So something is still going on.

I also tried logging out & back in on both Shields, same issue continues.

I’m seeing this on my Pixel 7 as well. Seems like it may be Android in general. I am only seeing this on my main account and not with anyone with whom I am sharing my library with. Including other user accounts within my Plex home.

Happening on Fire TV and Android tablet as well. So all android is likely.

Same here, Chromecast with Google TV, Pixel 7, and a Shield. All crashing every time I select media.

So I have confirmed the same that the logs downloaded from the server show next to nothing. It is JUST android devices it seems. It’s gotta be the new version.

Same here. Thought it was the new beta server update. Rolled that back. Same issue. Rolled client from beta to prod, same issue.

I just don’t know how to bring this to the developer’s attention. I really hope they can see this.

Also happening for me as of several hours ago.

Shield TV Tube, Pro, and the Android phone app are all crashing when attempting to view the media details page.

Plex on Nvidia Shield crashes every time I open a movie’s detail page. It just started today. Tried rebooting. Tried flushing cache. All versions current.

[Moderator Edit] Moved your post to this thread.

I suspect this is tied to the account interface. I can log in, (mostly) browse, but as soon as I play a file from a Sony Bravia, the app crashes to the OS.

However, if I play a file from my daughter’s internal account, it will play normally.

I’m casting from the web interface for now.
