Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

@VBB I playbacked My Fair Lady and observed audio dropouts for the first several minutes and then it stopped. I tested this on a 2015 Shield Pro using the public channel app v8.31.2

Playback stopped, you stopped playback or the audio dropouts stopped?

The audio dropouts stopped.

I just updated to version 8.31.2.31546 and starting watching Rocket Man (Dolby TrueHD) again. Playback started off fine but gradually degraded again. It seems to be either a buffer overflow or memory leak type issue. Sigh!

I will give that one a try as well. BD or 4K UHD BD version?

also might help if those reporting the issue state which version of the shield they are seeing the issue on

when played Spider-Man No Way Home with no issues at the weekend it was on the Shield Pro 2019

I watched something with normal 48kHz TrueHD 7.1 using client v9.0.0.31573 on a 2019 SHIELD Pro. No issues to report.

Regarding My Fair Lady with its 96kHz TrueHD 7.1, I watched a good 30 minutes of it last night. While the dropouts seemingly stop after the initial credits, they return every time the soundtrack ramps up, i.e. when it gets louder during a musical number. This can be hard to notice, if you’re not paying close attention.

Strangely enough, my hybrid copy of Akira would not even start from within Plex with either audio stream selected. Plays fine on the PC via MPC-HC, though.

This is looking more and more like incorrect encapsulation of Dolby MAT frames. There are two version of MAT. Version 1 was used with BDs and version 2 was introduced for 4K UHD BD for Atmos TrueHD.

if that was the case wouldn’t it affect everything with version 2?

should clarify that it was the UHD remux of Spider-Man NWH i had no issues with.

No only when the audio bitrate is too big and when encapsulation occurs, it gets clipped. This is deja vu from Aug 2019.

i don’t think i have any remuxes that have 96kHz audio tracks to test.

I am now testing in my media room with the Denon AVR-X6700H. Experiencing no audio dropouts during the intro of My Fair Lady. On my Nakamichi Shockwafe 9.2 Ultra, the audio dropouts are always at the same spot.

This goes back to the 2019 discussions re: audio dropouts. Some AVRs are more forgiving/tolerant of the malformed audio bit streamed MAT frames then others. The root cause is not with the AV equipment but somewhere in the layers of the audio stack on the Shield.

The root cause could be with Google, Nvidia or exoplayer (backend player of Plex app). @ChuckPa did some quick test with alternative players on the Shield and found the audio dropouts still occurred. This is going to require deep dive troubleshooting.

That’s correct, as it does not happen outside of the SHIELD using the same audio/video equipment.

The challenge is of course the limitless combination of equipment out in the wild. @VBB for reference, what sort of AVR/soundbar are you using in your environment?

Denon AVR-X3500H

I’m using an Anthem AVM60.

2019 Shield Pro.

Thanks for the update. It sounds complex! Good luck. I really hope this one can be resolved.

BD version. Audio bit rate is 4133kb/s with a maximum of 7836kb/s according to MediaInfo.
