Nvidia Shield + External drive - Viable server?

Hi All. I have been running Plex Server on a now old QNAP NAS. My new Samsung 4K TV with plex, won’t work with it as the server software is too old.

Looking for a solution.

Was reading about the Nvidia Shield, with an external HD. I have the highend Samsung soundbar that does Dolby Atmos, I have tried to play movies with 4K and Dolby Atmos, but the TV cannot play them.

I have read the Shield handles 4K and dolby Atmos.

Does this mean, if I set that up, with latest PS on it, it will play those 4K atmos files properly?

Loking for advice.

Lastly, if someone on a phone say, tries to play one of those 4K Atmos files, will it be able to transcode down to lower res ok?

Probably not. The Shield won’t have enough horse power to transcode 4k I assume (haven’t tested it myself).
But 4k atmos files will direct play on the Shield just fine, if your whole chain of devices supports both 4k and atmos.
