NVidia Shield new issue: "Direct Play is disabled"

Hi all,

Ran into a new issue tonight that wasn’t there yesterday - my NVidia Shield (2019) can’t seem to direct play anything from my server anymore, regardless of whether it’s h264, hevc, etc., I get the same transcoding reason:

Codec (h264) not supported in Container (mkv)

Direct play works on my native TV app, phone, other devices for the same media. Just not the Shield.

As best I can tell, Direct Play is not disabled anywhere (quality is set to maximum) and there doesn’t appear to be a “force direct play” option in the Shield TV app.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

It seems to be tied to the BETA version of the plex app on the Shield.
I dropped out of the Beta program and installed the public version, and the issue went away

Can you advise exactly how you did that? Was it from the Shield > Apps > Manage Apps section? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Affects Android mobile as well.

Thanks for the reports on this, a fix is being rolled out ASAP and should be available on the beta in the next few hours.

I suddenly have the same issue in my Android box.
Yesterday night everything played fine, but since today morning I cannot play almost anything,
As far as I know I’m not in the beta program.
So why am I affected?

I just updated to the beta that was released 6 hours ago (3 hours after your post) and it still shows the issue for me on my sony tv

im getting this same error, direct play disabled. Server version 1.21.3.4046, player version 8.13.0.22986. Is there any update or fix for this?
