Plex on Nvidia Shield TV Pro audio playback

Server Version#: 1.29.2.6364
Player Version#: ??? It’s not clear where this is located but I just installed in yesterday from Google Play.

First - just a comment that it’s disappointing that the overall feature set is not the same as the desktop version. May I assume that the developers are just playing catch-up with the desktop versions, and more is coming?

Right now, I’m trying to figure out settings so that I have HDMI passthrough on both Video and Audio files. My movies play in surround fine - but then when I play music - I hear nothing… with even stereo mp3 files - never mind output from DTS files.

Any ideas?

This should be brain-dead easy, and last I checked, I’m not brain-dead.

PS: I am not using the Android TV Server - My home server is on Windows 10

OK… I have audio now… but its only stereo - even when I play DTS 5.1 audio files.

Plex Android does not seem to have the same settings as in Windows; in regards to pass-through HDMI. Is it possible it’s because its only handled via the Android TV OS?

Sheild TV Pro does not seem to explicitly state an HDMI pass-through mode. It only talks about USB Audio.

Any Shield users figure out how to pass-through DTS audio formats from Plex so they are decoded at the AVR?

You should be able to set it in sound settings on the shield settings

In plex set to hdmi passthrough

in display and sound on nvidia shield there is a page that lets you set which formats your avr supports - you can set to automatic and let it handle it or set them yourself

And as an added bonus - if you turn off dolby processing it will convert aac and flac multichannel to multichannel pcm

Plex on Android - at least on my new Shield TV Pro - does not have HDMI passthrough like on the Windows desktop version. The only audio settings are: Remote Streaming Quality, Sweet Fades and Voulme Leveling. (All of these are off.)

In my Shield OS - under Advanced Audio - it only has USB Audio - and it is set to Surround. Yes, you can have it define AVR formats automatically - or manually; I’ve tried both.

I cannot find something that states HDMI passthrough.

When I play a DTS movie - it is indeed passed through… and I get a surround format. But when I play a DTS audio-only track, it somehow transcodes it to stereo. Plex with Windows set correctly works fine.

I think Plex Android does not do HDMI passthrough and certainly there is no option for it.

this is the place in the menu on plex on the shield

You can choose between no, hdmi and optical

Yup - I eventually found that… it is set to HDMI. But it does not work completely - and I believe it has to do with the audio player.

The problem I currently have with my Shield - and PLEX - is that it will passthrough DTS - and anything else - to my AVR when it is a video format and through the PLEX Video Player. But the PLEX Audio Player wants to transcode to stereo. So when I play a DTS audio-only file format from the audio player, I get stereo.

It’s not the Sheild. From the Sheild on-line docs, they state: “DTS audio will not be converted and will be passed directly to the HDMI output.

See here:
AVR / Surround Audio Setup (nvidia.com)

The PLEX Android Audio player seems very basic and I’m pretty sure my problems are associated with it. If someone has a different experience, I’d love to sort this…

BTW - it works perfect in Windows, and I hope that the decision to transcode to stereo is not based on Android mainly being used on mobile devices like phones.

PLEX could make this the default action, but they need to put in an option to always passthrough to HDMI - regardless of the source format. I don’t think this is what is happening now.

So: no one here is using a Sheild TV Pro to bitstream DTS surround, audio-only format to an AVR successfully?

The Plex Android TV app does not support multi-channel audio only files.

See this post (FireTV devices also use the Plex Android TV app): Amazon Fire Cube not playing multichannel audio properly - #11 by DaveBinM

The last time I tested multi-channel FLAC (July 2020), Plex played the left and right channels and dropped the rest: Why no support for 5.1 surround music playback? - #9 by FordGuy61.

In that case, PLEX has some nerve espousing their platform for audiophiles. Even a barely supported WMP from MS does far better, and just about all other modern media players are superior.

How is PLEX rationalizing this? nicer pictures? Not impressed.

@FordyGuy61: Been busy - but just got though those thread from top to bottom. First: I appreciate putting that post together for me. Informative.

And very disappointing that Plex could not do a simple pass-through on audio-only multichannel files. This is NOT a large programming job - so I have to assume it either by design - or ineptitude. Looks like I can’t use my brand new Shield for this purpose.
