The tube version of the 2019 Shield has always had issues with Dolby Vision in HDR high bitrate UHD content. it was so bad that I sold my tube and got the pro version and most of the issues have gone away.
The pro version has 3gb of RAM and a 64-bit OS.
The tube only has 2gb of RAM and a 32-bit OS, which may be part of the problem
I have a pro and I’m also having issues with HDR after 8.2.1. I’m having issues with this media type:
Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version 1, HDR10+ Profile B compatible
I’ve just upgraded my TV to the 65" Sony x900h with DV. I have a 2015 Shield and also the Android TV version - neither or which support DV. I was going to upgrade to the 2019 Pro to watch in DV but it seems like it’s hit and miss with whether DV works on the shield or not. Anyone got the Shield Pro 2019 and a Sony X900H working with DV?
Last night I installed Kodi and added Plex Kodi Connect (connection to plex server from Kodi client). High bitrate files play perfectly fine so it’s not a hardware limitation it is an issue with plex itself on the shield. DV doesn’t play as I don’t think that works on Kodi though.
While I agree it is probably an issue with Plex code optimization, I do think the issue is related to the hardware. So, both are technically true. According to Nvidia, they are working with Plex around optimization for the “Tube” because it has a different underlying hardware architecture.
That said, Shield Pro 2019 plays everything just fine. Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, etc. with ability to REW and FF. I couldn’t do any of those consistently on the “Tube” version.
I will add that Emby also had massive issues on the Tube. I run both client/server products for streaming. I didn’t mess with Kodi much.
I have the Shield Pro 2019 and often the Dolby Vision will not trigger along with Atmos. I will get HDR10 and DD+ for audio. Usually the two (Vision and Atmos) will work together meaning when Atmos comes on, so will Vision. I have the latest Plex version and Shield version (8.2.1).
