Hi,
Any news on that ? I just had the problem last week-end with TrueHD content, but only once or twice during the entire movie…
I thought it was related to my network config. But now everything is Cat6a and Ubiquity equipment. Audio cuts out 2 or 3 times per movie. Don’t know if it is related to the kind of audio stream. Everything is TrueHD or DTS-HD. I don’t have this issue with my Apple TV 4th gen, but it converts everything to PCM… Audio going straight from the HDMI to a Marantz SR7011 amp. If Apple TV ever gets decent audio support, I’m ditching the Shield.
I’m having a similar problem (with the latest release of Plex and the latest release of the Shield OS), although I also have the same problem with Netflix (less often, but it does happen). The audio drops out and won’t start up again until I fast-forward or rewind slightly. Then it works for a few minutes at most before dropping out again. I’m passing through to a Sony HT-XT2 via a Samsung TV.
If I prevent the server from transcoding by setting the video quality in the client to ‘maximum’, this problem seems to stop occurring.
I have the issue with direct play (without transcoding). Seems to occur with HD audio bitstream (Dolby true-hd, dts-hd…)
Anyone found a solution to this as its driving me nuts!
The whole reason for buying the Shield was for passthrough HD audio but I get audio dropouts throughout the film, the first dropout is usually about 20 mins in and then after that its a bit random as the film might be paused for a drink or toilet break.
The amp shows that passthrough is working (DTS-HD / True HD) and plex shows as direct play but the amp will lose its connection and then takes a few seconds to find it again. SPMC with the Plex addon is even worse as that will stop the video and go back to the media page.
I have refresh rate changing enabled on both and the TV shows a 24hz signal when playing the film but the drop outs just ruin the whole experience.
I switched to the shield as I want a family friendly all in one solution but I might just give up and go back to the media pc or just give up on HD audio and try a Fire TV.
I believe it has to be the Nvidia unit or the hdmi cable because I have the issue with netflix direct to my 3d tv that supports audio via hdmi natively. I would like a solution as my nvidia unit is brand new.
Update to this, I’ve been having success when using the shield through a wireless connection (AC) rather than connected by ethernet cable. Still direct play, no transcoding and audio formats showing correctly on the amp.
No idea why but I’ve watched a few films now (True HD and DTS HD) including one that always stuttered before and they are playing ok. Bit short of time at the min but will do some more testing, interested to hear if any of you have similar success.
I’m experiencing dropouts too… Im putting it down to the Plex app, audio cut out about ten times in an hour. Switched to Kodi latest version with Plex and it seems to be working properly. Picture quality just as good as Plex app. Atmos soundtrack.
From experience, Plex need to pull their finger out… On my other room set up I have amazon fire TV and the Plex app is shocking. Ended up running SBMC with Plex app and that works really well.
I had very similar issues:
Random audio drop out for about 2 seconds. This drop out randomly occurred at least once every 30 minutes. No video issues during the audio dropout.
HW is nVidia Shield Pro connected via HDMI to a Denon AVR.
I thought it might be an issue with my environment so I made sure that the storage and network (1Gb wired) were not being used by any other processes. Issue persisted.
I solved the issue by updating the movie metadata and selecting the “analyze” option for that movie. I waited until those two operations finished (it takes some time). Once I did that the issue went away.

Why does Plex app run on SBMC work better than Plex run on the Shield TV OS? Steve1987 reported the opposite that his experience got worse when he tried the addon in SBMC. Just trying to find the real solution as I experienced the issue last night for the first time using Plex on Shield TV OS.

Is this solution still working for you or was it only temporary? Any other insights to the issues you were having? As I just replied to nickquest@yahoo.com, I am starting to notice this issue and I am looking for a solution. I like Plex but I might need to move to a different platform if this is an issue.

Just seen this, my setup appears to still be working but I will add a caveat that I’ve only watched 1 or 2 films on the Shield since my last post so hasn’t been extensively tested.
Think my issue may have been different though as I later found that the network traffic between the plex server and the shield was quite sporadic with lots of peaks and dips rather than the smoother more consistent throughput I get now. I put this down to a device connected to my switch behind the TV reducing the network speed, not sure why but when removed file copy speeds when back up to what they should be for a GB network (interestingly file copy speeds to the shield remained the same at around 11MB/s but that seems to be a shield hardware limitation).
I’ve since connected the shield via ethernet again and the last film played did work without issue in both plex and SPMC. SPMC is easier for me to test as rather than dropping the audio for a second or two it would drop back to the title media page so I could leave it playing and come back to see if it had stopped.
Another setting you can try changing in SPMC is the pause during refresh change time. Might stop your amp dropping the connection completely.
I too have this same issue.
This happens on all movies with a DTS-HD MA soundtrack where the sound will randomly drop out/glitch for 2 seconds on passthrough. The video is unaffected. This occurs on both a wired gigabit connection and usb attached drive to the Shield TV.
There are no issue when playing AC3 soundtracks on passthrough. This is starting to really frustrate me.
I have tried all the solutions suggested and none have worked so far.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? It is extremely frustrating and there seem to ne a lot of us having the exact same issue with a sheild pro, receiver and server setup.
It seems to be solely an issue with direct play and hq audio - ie bluray and 4k remux files.
Still no solution.
The only thing that works without a hitch is the Apple TV 4K using Infuse Pro 5 - it passes through 24-bit Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA audio without a hitch and not a drop out in sight.
I’m still hoping Plex can come up with a fix that so many people need so I can resurrect my Plex/Shield combo again.
Has anyone tried the latest app update? It changes the player being used, I still haven’t seen the update pop-up on my shield. Curious if it fixes the drop outs and the 24bit TrueHD transcode issues.
I’m running the version from Feb 10 (6.13.6.3452) on my Shield, and I’m still having this issue. The player is ExoPlayer v2. It’s definitely related to playing TrueHD content (e.g., I can play a 4K HDR movie without any issues if I change the audio track from TrueHD 5.1 to AC3 5.1).
This seems to be an issue with ExoPlayer and it has been reported already, I hope Plex devs are already aware of this issue. https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/3803
