Shield Experience 8.0 Audio Drop Outs

Server Version#: 1.16.3.1433 (Windows PC)
Player Version#: 7.19.0.11630 (Shield TV)

Hi Guys,

Anyone else experiencing audio dropouts since Shield Experience 8.0? I’m seeing it pretty frequently (maybe every 3-5 mins and sometime many in a handful of seconds). Was perfect before the update.

I think it’s only happening in Plex and when audio is bit-streaming to AV Receiver. Fortunately I have two other shields which i haven’t updated yet so i could swap this device out and perform a before/after test again if needed but I wondered if anyone else had seen it before I potentially ‘break’ all my shields.

Disabling HDMI passthrough works around the issue.

Network Logging output from the shield as the issue happened. It occurred 3 times in the time range of this log file. Not sure it shows anything interesting.

I am also having this issue only since the update. I’ve tried a bunch of media that I know worked before and it appears to be only the surround sound media tracks that are having issues.

I tried the disable HDMI passthrough workaround but I just get a bunch of garbled video when trying to watch 4K with that.

I watched a 4K movie last night w/o any problems.

Might check the audio settings on the Shield (detailed audio settings, about three menus down). Noticed you can now select specific formats. Not sure how this affects Plex. Haven’t experimented w/ it yet.

Also running 1.16.3 & 7.19.0.

I have a feeling it might be HD audio codecs only. It isn’t influenced by the shield audio settings.

@FantomByte you will need a reasonably powerful server if you disable HDMI pass through.

Link to (what I think is) the same issue on the nVidia forum Here.

Did your 4k movie have a HD audio track and are you connected to an AV receiver capable of decoding that audio format?

Yes. TrueHD + Atmos.

Shield --> Denon 4300 --> LG B7 OLED

I’ve only watched one 4K movie since the update, so not exactly a large sample size. I’ll try a 4K movie with dts-HD and report back if I run into any issues.

Edit / Followup: Watched a 4K HDR10 movie with dts-HD MA 7.1 audio tonight (4 Aug). I did not have any audio or video issues.

I’m having the exact same issues. I tried doing a total reset of the shield but no dice. :pensive:

I have a ticket open with nVidia and have submitted a debug to them.

Having the same issue since the update. Only happens in PLEX and seems to be sporadic. Will be working for 5-6 mins then audio drops out for a second then maybe happens again 30 seconds later. Rinse repeat

Neither Netflix or Amazon Prime are having this issue.

having the same issue and weirdly in my case after reading a ton of issues from the past. If i turn off Ethernet and use wifi i do not get the audio drop outs. But ethernet gives me the drop out. The shield is connected to the same google wifi hardwired/wifi .

I can confirm I experience this issue with HD audio bitstream dropping.

I am having the same issue since the update. It’s happening on all files that have TrueHD/Atmos, DTS-X, DTS-HDMA. It happens randomly every few minutes for a second or so.

Its not just Plex. Kodi and Emby are also impacted.

- HD Audio dropouts. Investigating

Open Known Issues after release
- Pointer appears in PubG. Will be fixed in next release.
- System volume (Navigation) sounds lower in Android P/SE8.0 than Android O/SE7.x. Confirmed, reviewing reason for the change, considering to revert.
- Launcher app Icons zoomed/cropped. Investigating.
- TV loses sync (no input) on modesets (power on, wake from sleep, refresh/resolution changes). Investigating.
- Custom DNS entries appear to revert back to default. This is a UI issue, the custom DNS is in use but the default ones are being displayed. Will be fixed in future release.
- USB dac passthrough not working in Kodi. Investigating.
- USB audio level reset to 25% on reboot. Investigating.
- Wifi disconnects. Investigating.
- Wifi throughput issues causing 4k streaming, etc issues. Investigating.

Are you connected directly to a display like the LG OLED or to an AVR?

Just as a side question. Does signing up for a hotfix keep you on a hotfix path with Nvidia if that makes sense.

Probably better explained… I signed up for the VC1 hotfix which I got within 24 hours.
Since then I seemed to have had another hotfix release yesterday or the day before. Sadly I clicked out before fully reading all the readme so I’m not sure what is was supposed to address.

What is your build version installed now?
Hotfix 2 would be 8.0.1(32.5.205.51)

OK. thanks, I’m out and about now so will take a look when I get home.

I thought once you sign up you receive all the hotfixes. Guess I’ll find out when Hotfix 3 ships.

I signed up & received Hotfix 2, which is the current hotfix according to the thread on Nvidia’s forum.

Nvidia staff updates the top post when a new hotfix is available. Their forum doesn’t show when the post was edited, so it looks like the info is 20 days old when it is really about 7 days old.

Good to know. Thanks.

I was prompted for Hotfix 3 without an additional sign up.
