nVidia Shield "Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video"

And the last missing key ingredient… the logs files from PMS server when this is happening

PMS Server > Settings > Troubleshooting > Download Logs (make sure debug is checked, verbose is not).

Best option > restart PMS, give it a couple minutes to “settle” then play video that is having issue for 30s to 1 Min, then stop and let plex settle for a minute, then dump logs.

Link with instructions for how to get the logs:

I did also have this problem, but I found the issue (I think):

My setup was also NVIDIA SHIELD TV as Plex Server/Client and my files are hosted on synology nas.

If I did open the plex app on a webbrowser I could open Status → Dashboard. When I start a movie on the Shield the Bandwidth did go to somewhere like 500 to 800 MBits. I was searching for the problem and found out that this is an issue due to dts sound. I do not know, why this happens, but If you convert your Audio to different Codes, you will not have the problem, I guess.

Because I do not want to reconvert my audio, I transcode the movie

Best regards

Hello, sorry. I hope this is what you were looking for, I followed your steps to obtain it. Also in regards to the DTS audio, the movies that I have been playing are usually Dolby Atmos and then also sometimes DTS so I don’t believe that is the issue for me. Thank you for the response

Plex Media Server.log (120.6 KB)

You need to post the Client log:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

Enable logging in the app settings, play the file, and as soon as the error happens stop it and save the log file and add it to your post.

Alright will do. Out of town til Thursday but I’ll do it first thing when I get back. Also I assume those directions are for the Plex app, will this also work for the Plex kodi addon? Going off memory I don’t recall seeing a network debugging option but simply a general enable debugging option. Thanks

Alright I believe I have what is needed. I will add the plex log as well as the kodi log.

Edit: For anyone interested, this solved my particular problem of 4K movies not playing properly in the Plex for Kodi addon

It appears the issue is resolved with this branch https://github.com/pannal/plex-for-kodi/archive/pr_playback_fixes.zip just had to rename the contents of the linked zip file to scripts.plex, navigate to the kodi addons folder on the shield and replace the scripts.plex folder and videos play fine now. For anyone doing this you need to disable automatic updates of the addon.

Still having problems on shield…switched over to my Sony android TV and its working flawlessly it’s a bit annoying that it doesn’t work on the more powerful shield but at least I can watch my content I guess until there’s an outright fix across all platforms

Are logs still needed? Looks like a couple have been posted.

I’m also having the same problem. I can go 20-30 minutes in between errors and if I go back and hit play again it will play fine for another 20-30 minutes.

Has this error been acknowledged by the development team? It must have been a recent change because I have gone months, before this, with no problems and then this popped up a few weeks ago and I now can’t watch anything longer than 30 minutes without having to restart playback at least once. It’s extremely annoying.

I want to pile onto this issue…

When I choose to play high bitrate videos on my Shield TV I get the issue that the server is not fast enough.
Playing the same video on my Apple TV 4K, MacBook Pro, HTPC, iPhone, or iPad is not an issue.
I’ve tried to figure this out with NVIDIA Support with no luck, this all occurred after the 7.2 Update.

All devices are connected over Gigabit Ethernet.

PMS:

  • Version 1.15.0.659

  • Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti

@natemac I am seeing a lot of the following error in your PMS logs:

DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 1327104 bytes: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

Also does it for any files, or only certain files. Is it all iTunes Rips or just certain ones, etc.

Please rerun the test, and provide the following:

Screenshot of the specific Media XML: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201998867-investigate-media-information-and-formats/

PMS Server Logs & PMS Client Logs from the same test run: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

Thanks Trexx, I’m not sure what the “Failed to stream media” is. I’ve never had an issue where media failed to run.
I attempted to play the video on the shield and then I downloaded the log, so the issue should be towards the end of the log.
I will try to stream some Blu-ray rips I’ve made to see if that also causes an issue, but as of right now iTunes rips (including SD versions of Futurama) are the only thing that are an issues. PlayOn rips play fine.

I won’t be able to run the test again till this evening.

Attached is the XML Info.
Air-XML.zip (2.6 KB)

If it is only iTunes rips that are having the issue, I would say it is might be a SW related issue with the app you are using for the rips.

Try re-encoding the file you provided the XML for, using something like Handbrake and see if that makes any difference in playback.

As for the error, the last part of the error is what I more focus on

“An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host”

Even though this is only a Nvidia Shield issue and not an Apple TV, Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad issue?
And also that it’s was only an Nvidia Shield issue after the 7.2 update?

Plex still has dependencies on the underlying “OS” for each of it’s clients. As for Shield OS 7.2 specific, I know that Nvidia has had some point releases already addressing specific issues with the 7.2.x releases and several of them specifically addressed Plex related bugs.

Let’s first isolate down if it is an issue specific to the media ‘rip’ encoding method via testing with handbrake and then we can go from there.

I have been having the same issue for months now. Nothing on my home server runs on the Shield’s plex app. I’ve tried changing the H.264 max level from 5.2 to 5.0 which I saw on one of the other forum posts and I also gave the shield a static IP and told the Plex server to connect automatically which I saw on another one. Nothing works. I have everything from 480p TV shows to 4K movies. Nothing streams. However for some reason when I play from a different server it runs fine. I played a movie from my brothers server without issue. I’ve also used my android phone and my roku and those stream it fine. Going through chromecast is also fine. I’ve attached my logs below. Is there anything else needed?

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-02-11_21-37-17.zip (3.6 MB)

Please description your home nw setup.

By playing fine from your brothers servers, it sounds more likely an issue with you server or home network setup.

---- updated

Based on reviewing your logs, the errors are pointing towards a NW config/routing issue.

Is there a way to clear the log, so only new information from a point is shown?

@natemac Basically stopping/restarting PMS will cause the logs to rollover.
