This is something frustrating for me. It doesn’t seem reasonable to me that the Android Plex App, first of all, needs to have access to the internet to access a local plex media server. Second and more importantly for me(I’m on a metered connection) that downloading offline versions to the plex app requires the download to be routed through the internet even though my phone is only a few meters away from the server it is downloading from.
Plex accesses the internet e.g. to verify if you have a Plex Pass to use the related benefits. Beyond that, the data use should be related to updating metadata or looking for online extras for your movies (which won’t download unless you play them).
The actual playback will happen inside your home network without internet access – that is if your client properly finds your server in your home and doesn’t go for a stroll, trying to access it as a remote server (e.g. using Plex’ relay in case that doesn’t work straight away).
As for your setup… is your phone not only a few meters away from the server but also using the same network?
Yes. That was implied from my statement. My main issue is that plex used 4 GB of data(on my wifi not cell data) overnight while it synced a TV show. This was traffic to the internet not just local traffic. I have since enacted a habit of turning the internet on to start the syncing and turning it off after it has started.
At the risk of sounding silly…
When you write “plex used 4 GB of data (on my wifi not cell data)”… do you mean plex transferred 4 GB of data inside your home network or to the internet?
Do you have any other downloaders etc. installed on that server that could be acting out of order?
sigh I would appreciate it if you would pay attention to my entire post, you apparently missed the part where I said, “this s traffic to the internet, not just local traffic.” I transferred over 50gb of data to my phone, 4 of which was routed over the internet. There is nothing else that would explain this data (though I must admit the source for this information is from the service provider and undifferentiated) but the information lines up with my usage logs (which I checked other devices and didn’t show gb worth of usage). Ultimately I’m working around it and am not willing to replicate the problem in order to tease out the cause. But in short it was internet traffic, not local traffic, and no there were no downloads occurring on any other devices.
