at a remote house with only internet via satellite, we are using a plex server on the house network with 3 tablets for watching. How much data via internet does plex use ? only for checking the subscription i presume ? what can i expect in data volume/ week ?
Unfortunately it will be a lot of work for an of the users in this forum to get gather enough specifics to answer your question in detail.
i can only hope someone that uses Plex on a limited internet connection can chime in with some figures for you.
i personally would not use Plex on a limited internet connection. i know it uses a lot of data.
about a year ago i was on a 5gb data plan. long story short i was waiting for my vehicle to be serviced. and it took est. 4 hrs. i watched âCaptain America: The First Avengerâ and âCaptain America: The Winter Soldierâ it used 3.8gb of data. (it was like the first GD day of the usage cycle too) i had to finish the month with 1gb of data.
If your server is local it should use a minimum of data.
Here is a FAQ article about it.

Note that the data usage they are talking about for the apps is the âcheck inâ to verify account status or load a piece of the app (i.e. Google Chrome needs to load the player from the internet to play).
I understand OP will not stream media over his internet link, but will only fetch metadata for Plex with it.
You can reduce the amount of data consumed by Plex a little bit further, if you disable certain of its automatic maintenance jobs.

I recommend to disable
- Refresh local metadata every three days
- Refresh metadata periodically
- Analyze and tag photos
You might also want to verify that remote acccessibility for your server is off.

As an additional safeguard, (it sounds contradictive, but bear with me) disable âSecure Connectionsâ.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/
âsecure connectionsâ (read: network encryption) are not needed without remote access, and disabling them will also prevent Relay access from working.

You might also want to opt out from sending additional diagnosis data from your server and clients to plex.tv https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy-legal/privacy-preferences/#opd
