I’ve been reading and reading and can’t find a definitive answer. So sorry in advance if this is a duplicate.
We just got hit by a tropical storm and internet is out. We have power but no internet. And we can’t open plex on any of our devices. If my plex server is online and on my network why can’t we use it when the internet is down?
I fully understand that I can’t watch various other integrated plex features…but my local library should still be available and I should still be able to log into each account locally.
If you have secure connections enabled and the player app set to require them then they won’t work because that requires the internet.
You cannot log into something without internet. Plex accounts are not local to the server and never have been local.
When you sign into/claim your server that enables requiring authorization. If you want to disable requiring authorization for certain IPs of player devices tp access your server, you can add them to the networks allowed without auth setting in your servers network settings. You can also manually add them to the advanced settings then restart server.
Apps that can work without internet should retain their last logged in user as long as you don’t actually sign out of the app. If you don’t have internet then you cannot switch to different accounts. The act of switching is signing out of one account and signing into the other.
The Shield and iOS devices should still work as long as you did not sign out of them. ON the shield you may have to set the “allow insecure connections” setting to “on the local network”
be aware If your kids have their own iPad for example and their account is already signed into it then yes the restrictions set should still work. The problem is that if your kids are smart then they may figure out that all they need to do it sign out and their device if you have the device IP set to not require auth will allow them to see everything.
@BigWheel thank you for the feedback and being so detailed in explaining.
So for me, one thing I am having a hard time with is when the internet goes down. I don’t have plex remote access turned on. I don’t want that feature, I don’t trust my firewall open like that and I have an internet provider that has bandwidth caps.
We lose power and internet sometimes…mostly in the winter. I would love to be able to keep the functionality that I have, which is viewing my local medial If I don’t have internet.
Having only the last logged in user isn’t really helpful for us. The majority of the time we are on my 18 month old’s account…except for nap and bed time.
I love love love the plex project. I would like to find a way to enable offline mode with user + pin support so that the kids can watch appropriate things and so can we…on our own accounts.
I think if remote access is disabled, everything should be local to the server in the plex database files.
Maybe this is just a plex pass feature? I am a lifetime member so it’s not an issue
I understand and as far as I am aware work is being done so switching users is possible with or without internet.
My suggestion is to make sure at least your computer that you use for managing the server you add it’s IP ot the networks allowed without auth. Then if something happens you can always access it with that and add other device IPs temporarily as needed.
