Same issue here - Android grey screen when hitting play on synced content. All other Chromecast apps working fine

I’m quite unsure if this is being looked into by Plex team. I’m trying to mention here a couple of Plex people who are posting into the release announcement for the Android player and Chromecast: Plex for Android and Plex for Chromecast - maybe they will pick this issue up. It’s affecting a lot of users and there are at least 4 distinct threads and quite annoying that a Plexpass feature is not working for months

Summary: using Plex app, casting to (for eg Chromecast) works when the content is played from the Plex server. Problem happens when you sync media to your phone/tablet and try to play back the phone/tablet synced content if (for eg) your Plex server not available

Thanks to everyone that’s reported this issue (and sorry for not replying sooner).

So yeah it’s not possible to play synced content with Chromecast at the moment. We’re aware of the limitation and have plans to fix it (can’t provide an ETA at the moment though).

Do you happen to have an ETA as yet?
Sync (and so playback of the synced content) is mostly the reason why I have Plexpass. Current workaround is that Plex syncing the content to my tablet as usual, then I need to identify the file on the Android filesystem and use BubbleUPnP to play that file on Chromecast. This is quite ugly and not what you’d expect when buying the lifetime subscription

Yes please provide an ETA? I too have a lifetime subscription and rely on this feature.
@beepee79 How do I find the find my sync’d file in the android file system? Where does Plex store them? Many thanks!

@ctdavies1: You’ll find on your storage (internal (phone) or external (sd)) under Android/data/com.plexapp.android/files/media_parts/
It’s not really straightforward who is who, but you’ll figure it out from there.

I purchased a chromecast yesterday for our summerhouse, which has really poor internet connection, for the soul purpose to bring offline and synced Plex media on both iPhone and iPad to cast. If this issue is nowhere close to a solution I am bringing the chromecast back and getting something else.
Plz let me know asap.

I can only get offline music to cast on my nvidia sheild if i open up the plex app on the sheild and cast to the plex app.

Yeah this is kind of complete B’s. Whole reason I have plex is for sync content. Half the time it doesn’t download. And it won’t even stream even more. All the developers care about is their stupid please tv that no one wants. Just fix the basics first.

Does anyone know, If I was to get a Apple TV instead of Chromecast, would I be able to play synced/offline material from an iPhone or iPad?

I am aware that this is a thread about Chromecast, but since it doesn’t work the way we want with synced/offline material, surely someone must have a better option.

I found casting works on Android if you set Plex to use external player and select VLC. Not ideal but a workaround for now.

Can confirm this does not work. Getting a grey screen, and in the app it stay’s on pause and starts the movie at 33:40 somewhere. I’ve synced in original quality, 1080p 20mbps and 1080p 8mbps.
