I found the fix. At the right bottom corner of the player are three dots. Select this, and then Playback Settings. When I selected Convert Automatically, then connected to Chromecast, and then started playing the movie, it worked.

I am on latest Plex client 8.4.0.19279, galaxy note 9 on android. I donât get âconvert automaticallyâ on playback settings (at least not when playing a syncâd file).
The workaround I used last year was to roll back to a very old client (canât remember but was 7.17.4 I think) on my old phone, which still worked ok. Unfortunately, I was naive enough to presume Plex wouldâve fixed this by now, so I have gone on holiday with my current phone & current plex client, with several GB of syncâd media and no backup
The other workaround mentioned in this thread (either use external player in plex options, or browse externally to the plex file on local storage and play it from another app that sullorts casting) no longer works for me, either: the former gives errors on both VLC and bubblepnp when trying to cast; the latter no longer works because (unrooted) the android/data/com.plexapp.android/files folder shows as empty, and I canât find my GBâs of syncâd content anywhere else on local storage.
So, anyone who is unrooted on android, and who can successfully either play syncâd media to external player and cast that successfully, OR who can locate where the underlying files are on local storage, could you please post an idiot proof guide?
Just to add: I just tested with 7.17.4 again - still installs OK and connects to plex server, but it no longer allows casting of synced files, you just get same gray screen as for current client.
Oh well. At least I have brought a usb/HDMI hub with me this time, so I can at least use Samsung DEX to get my video on the big screen. Total PITA though.
In exactly the same situation. This used to be such a great feature and I canât find any workaround that actually works with casting syncâd media on andriod
Canât believe this is still broken. It isnât just for Chromecast, clearly itâs inherent to the plex app on mobile device as a âserverâ, seeing as it doesnât work on Chromecast, my Apple TV or my Roku Premier. This is such an important feature to have on board for me. Please sort this out!
Still Broken⊠Just posting so this topic doesnât close.
Please fix this.
for me itâs just music files , no problems with video, just music, buying the plex pass didnât do anything for me.
I seem to have the same issue. Have been using Plex to cast to Chromecast for several years and really impressed. In Feb 2020 casting from any android device now results in âready to castâ screen on the chromecast device and the android app crashes with âApp has stopped workingâ error message. Casting frommy PC to Chromecast is still working fine but all my andoid devices result in not casting and the same crash âapp has stopped workingâ message and frozen screen.
I just tried it and it worked. Local syncâd video content cast to a new Google Chromecast with Google TV. Plex for Android version 8.16.2.24953.
Anybody else tried recently?
Casting of local syncâd video working to Chromecast Ultra. Took server offline to confirm, this looks like a fix to me. Can anybody else confirm?
