OK, I'm just gonna say it: PLEX kicks ass

Yeah, I know. This forum is all about bitchin’ and moanin’ about how nothing works and nobody listens and the features that everybody wants ain’t there.

Well I’m just gonna say that y’all must be runnin’ a whole different version of the package than I am because what I got is feature-rich, well designed, and solid as a rock. All of my various players work seamlessly. All of my remote streams transcode and play transparently, All of my friends and family are ecstatic over having access to my server.

I don’t know what I’m doing different from the rest of you but it’s working. There have been little annoyances here and there but I haven’t had a server crash or serious issue pop up in many, many months. I spend a lot more time messing with issues on my workstation than I do on my PLEX server.

Could there be more features I’d like to see added? Sure. Are there a few bugs here and there that need to be fixed? Absolutely. But any package of this complexity is going to have those issues. I’ve been waiting for Microsoft to make NTFS case sensitive and fix the Windows SMB stack for close to thirty years and I don’t expect to see much movement on those two bucket items either. Please send me a memo when Gnome figures out how to easily preserve window size and position across sessions.

This is HARD stuff to develop, folks. There are literally millions of possible combinations of media types, codecs, and players that have to be accounted for and it all has to run on a couple dozen different operating systems in the hands of (often grossly) inexperienced people. If you think that’s easy then learn to code and find out for yourself.

I just think there needs to be a better appreciation of the devs around here. For the price they ask of a PlexPass we’re getting some amazing functionality and value. How much do you think you’d be paying if Adobe was developing this stuff?

Yes, it could be better but so can everything else. PLEX is pretty damned good as it is and gaining ground every day. People should stop and think about that before teeing off on the devs. They deserve better than how we treat them on this forum.

So thank you to everyone at PLEX for putting this package out there. It has truly changed the way my family and I interact and made our lives much, much closer and better. Setting up my server was the best time and money I ever spent.

Just sayin’. Cheers.

P.S. - No, am I not in any way affiliated with PLEX or any of their owners or employees. I’m just a guy who likes to see proper credit given when due.

I totally agree. I have been using Plex for a couple of years now without any real issue. I run mine in a docker container on a Unraid system and it just works. As you said yes there are bugs here and there but nothing major that would prevent me from using it.

Agree.

Plex has been incredibly robust given the platforms and configurations it supports.

Super responsive tech team.

Plex provides us a great platform for home video and image sharing locally and overseas with family and friends without the negatives of other options such as FB and YouTube.

Plex Server On Windows with Live TV/DVR and Android/FireTV clients. It’s absolutely sucked for the last 16 months. Never worked when I wanted it to. Timeshifting livetv (i.e. watching something while it’s still recording) has been a horribly buggy experience, especially for sports.

Well, don’t know what to say Wiz. I’m running the same server/client combinations as you and it runs smooth as silk. Don’t know what the difference is but I wish you luck in finding it.

Look, the OP was asking what setup unhappy customers had. So I answered. I don’t know how you could possibly have a good experience time shifting sports. With sports, we usually record extra time. During that extra time, it is not possible to even begin playback because there is no UI for it. The play icon is removed from the UI after the regular time is over. So you have to wait for the recording to completely finish before you can watch – like we had to do with VCR tapes. Plex knows about this and have said that it’s just not a priority for them to fix. So I just can’t see how timeshifting sports is running smooth as silk for you.

In addition, there are long running threads where “Play From Start” is not working and instead going live. With sports, this usually has the effect of showing you the score and spoiling it for you. Again, not smooth as silk.

And in the web player, the current problem is that live tv playback kicks off after 3 minutes.

Uh, I’m the OP and I don’t recall asking that nor was I in any way questioning your experience. I was just trying to offer you a little hope that others with your setup have it working fine so there has to be a solution for you. T’was nothin’ less chill than that.

Then, I apologize. I had taken your previous post to mean that you had the same general setup and time shifting working well for you, when I know that it’s impossible for sports, on any client.
