Old Samsung v New Philips & Apple TV

Server Version#:

Hi, bit of an odd problem (to me anyway).
I run Plex on my QNAP TS251-A.
I have set up my son (remote user) so he can use my server from his flat.
I have a gigabit syncronous fibre connection and consistently report >900Mbps upload speed.
He has 100Gb fibre download speed.

His television in his bedroom which is pretty ancient (Samsung) plays each movie or TV show flawlessly. Quick loading, no stuttering and great quality. Its connected to his router via wifi.

His television in his living room - a new Philips TV with Apple TV addon - no matter if we use Plex app on the TV or the apple TV box, the results are the same - poor quality, slow transcoding, stuttering unwatchable. The TV is connected directly to his router via a network cable.

Question is - we’ve tried every setting on my Plex server and nothing much seems to work - its bizarre how his old TV is fine with a wif connection but his new TV is rubbish with a wired connection (we switched to Wifi with no better results).

Any ideas where to start to get his living room plex working properly?

many thanks.

Sounds like the old Samsung TV is able to direct play your files. The Plex app on the Philips TV is old and probably can’t direct play so it’s asking your server to transcode everything. Your NAS might not be up to the task.

Not sure why the Apple TV wouldn’t work. That should play a lot of files as well. Would need logs from the Apple TV to investigate. Apple TV Logs | Plex Support
