Old topic : plex without internet connection

Server Version#: 1.15.8.1198

PMS is running on Windows 10.
I’m accessing PMS locally on the server using Firefox (also tried with Chrome and got the same issue).
Network setting is : 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 (my ip is static 192.168.1.36)
I’ve tried with DLNA enabled, and then disabled.
My PMS is NOT set as a Home system (only one user exists).
Remote Access is disabled.
Everytime I’ve made configuration changes, I’ve also restarted PMS.

I still need to login to plex.tv before I can access my PMS.
Please help.
Thank you

I’m confused. Is there a question in there? What do you need help with?

Ah, funny! You’re right, the question here is not obvious. What I meant was that I was trying to set my PMS so that i would not have to login to access the content.
Turns out the last glitch left was the configuration of firefox, which I’ve made just a touch too tight here. To keep things simple, I use chrome to access my PMS, since my chrome is configured much more loosely.
Sorry for the confusion

I’m not sure what you’ve done, but in general, if your Plex Media Server is signed into Plex.tv, i.e. it’s been claimed (Settings \ Server \ General), then you have to sign into the client to access it. You can manually add an option in your Plex Media Server to allow access without needing to be authenticated. Settings \ Server \ Network \ List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth. Note that this does not /cannot apply to the computer that Plex Media Server is running on.

“then you have to sign into the client”

If my Plex server is installed on my PC, and also is installed my local NAS and I only need to access Plex via LAN ( NAS->Roku->TV ) where is the Client? Shouldn’t’ my client be on my NAS? If so, why isn’t LAN sufficient? Why be redirected from a local IP (192.168.x.x:32400) to Plex.tv? I do client/server programming all of the time using a localhost, no internet/WAN necessary.

I entered my local ip addresses, my pc’s static address: 192.168.x.xxx and My NAS 192.168.x.xxx. I then tried to access 192.168.x.xxx:32400 and an “error in login” appears.

Can you detect my question and concern?

1 - If you have Plex Media Server installed on your PC and your NAS, then you have 2 servers. You only need one. If your PC can see the files on your NAS, then you can just have PMS on the PC. If you want the power saving of a NAS, then use only the one on the NAS and uninstall from the PC.

2 - If you want to watch using a Roku, the client is the Plex for Roku app. You install this from the Roku directly.

It only does this to authenticate your account. Once authenticated the connection stays within your network. You won’t see this again unless you sign out and need to re-authenticate.

Yes, I shouldn’t have mentioned the Plex on PC, I don’t use it. I actually uninstalled it.

I understand this. But if I don’t want internet say. Say I decided I don’t want internet at all, no access to the web. I should not be prompted to log-in to an outside host on the www. That’s the question and the problem. You are just telling me, yes you have to log in.

I should be able to authenticate on my own machine as my software is installed on my own machine and I am watching a movie on my own machine (NAS) through my LAN. I should not be asked to authenticate my account through a third-party across the WEB if I’m accessing something on my own machine.

You could be honest and say, “Plex doesn’t allow you to access your movies on the Plex Server unless you check in with our servers on the web first”. That’s honest. And it’s undesirable.

If we don’t authenticate your account, how could we verify that you have access to a server or that you even have a Plex account. Or in your case a Plex Pass. You need an internet connection, at least for a little while to authenticate this information.

If you don’t want any type of authentication, then do not sign into your server. If your server isn’t signed into your Plex account, then you don’t need to authenticate the clients that access it.

Would you please push this up to a supervisor. It seems that you don’t know what you are saying. Plex is FREE. Further more I did pay for my PLEX pass, as you can see by my username (verified). Please push or elevate this concern to a person that actually can give a coherent answer. You are only stating and restating your previous statement. And you are not providing any coherent responses to my concerns. Software on a NAS can authenticate my computer because it’s on my network (LAN). A connection to the WWWW/WAN should not be necessary. If Plex is designed to only function with a connection to the WWW/WAN then you need to point to the location where this is the case or just say so. I don’t know what “Team Member” means, if you are in India, or you are a volunteer, or just a call center. Please elevate my questions and concerns to your supervisor

Internet is not required all the time, but it is required for certain things. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200484903-internet-and-network-requirements/

Yesterday my cable TV / Internet service went out for the whole neighborhood for the evening. I thought no big deal I have a NAS full of movies and TV shows + HDHomeRun Connect Duo, I’ll just manually launch Plex on my Fire TV and watch my own TV service. It was all useless. If the internet is not reachable because it is down. Seems lame that I could not connect to my on server (running on windows PC) without the internet. I just tried what was said above about logging out and all you get is a screen that says “Plex is not reachable.” So even the plex server itself is useless without the internet. Is there any way to use Plex without the internet?

Did you log out from the server and the client?

MoveFan.Plex thanks for the helpful reply!

I logged out on the server and then was unable to do anything and didn’t bother trying to launch the client at the time. Since then I have upgraded from version 1.16.5.1554 to version 1.17.0.1841. … Just now I disconnected the internet connection from my home network and tried again. It all seemed to work just fine. With no internet to my home network Both the server and client both showed the admin user account to select, none of the other users were available for selection (which I am OK with). So I am at a loss for why it wouldn’t work yesterday and now it works. Maybe the update fixed something OR maybe something else was wrong…
with out further testing ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Again, Thanks!
