On Deck, Continue Watching & Recently Added

So, instead of polish before rollout, the thinking must be :gem: (Plex before) to :poop: (Our current predicament) and eventually :fire: (Your expected result). I’m a freeloader, so take all of this with a grain of salt, but shouldn’t it idealy be :gem: to :fire: without the interim :poop:? Even so, I’ll stick by you and buy that Plex pass soon. Cannot wait for :fire:

I know it has been said that Plex encourages a single Movie library and Tv library and I get that but there are reasons…I have a Movie library and a TV library but I also have a separate library for my family’s home movies and one for my wife’s and then a ā€œTVā€ library for some unique things that we want to break out by year (using year as a season). Now these clutter up the Home Screen because they each have their own recently added, even if they have not actually been very recent, just recent in that library.
Just let us combine if we want. A simple Treat all libraries of the same type as one toggle would be great. Or, if we are going nuts, let us decide by library which ones to combine with on the home screen and have it apply across users and devices since we are the Admins!

It just keeps getting worse. I’ve used plex for 6 years now and always enjoyed the experience and this is the first change where I have actively searched out alternatives to use rather than plex.

I opened up my Android TV today to find that the workaround I’ve been using (manually control your home screen) no longer works for me - now it is only showing the results from a single library - so now I am missing 80% of the new shows. WTF is going on? Have you guys outsourced your development without providing any documentation on how it hangs together?

This is so frustrating - if I wasn’t involved in the middle of this car crash I would be slowing down to watch as it is almost comical how badly this rollout has been conceived and then rolled out - and no amount of saying ā€˜it’s part of a grander plan that will benefit all’ makes it less painful or less pathetic

OH GOSH !!!

I am late to this party!

So in December I finally decide to bend the knee, and got a 2019 Shield Pro… Why did you do that??.. I hear you ask…

Well, Plex were adamant that if I wanted 4K / HDR / Dolby Vision and all the HD audio support, it would have to be!

Really painful considering PMP on my HTPC is darn near perfect!

Then some weeks ago there’s a new update, I get a ton of additional ā€œRecently Addedā€ lines on my homepage, and I’m like… Whaaat???

So I figure out what’s going on, and delete most of them without truly realizing what was actually going on…

And now tonight I suddenly realize there are several movies that are not appearing in the ā€œRecently Addedā€ā€¦

I flip over to the Sony X950H’s Android TV version… Same…

I flip back to PMP, and of course, because that hasn’t been touched in some months, the ā€œRecently Addedā€ still behaves as expected…

So now I’m reading through an ENORMOUS topic, to find out that apparently this was intentional???

Like, REALLY?

So my choices currently are… Set the homepage to Auto and live with that mess, or try and manage my homepage myself which is supposed to be ā€œendlessly configurableā€ and I cannot get it to behave how it was!

Which takes me back to my first statement…

OH GOSH !!!

Now as if this wasn’t bad enough…

I was recently really pleased to find out that PMP4 is finally once again in the oven…

But now I’m actually rather worried about that… Because if they are going to introduce this iteration of ā€œRecently Addedā€ to the long awaited PMP4…

Well…

I return back to by original statement…

OH GOSH !!!

EDIT: And forgot my use case…

2x TV libraries - 1 for adults, one for kids.
2x Movie libraries - 1 for adults, one for kids.

Don’t really want 4x Recently added on my homepage… Kinda pointless, when the ā€œone for allā€ worked just fine.

So, as others have pointed suggested, kinda needs a toggle to enable / disable this new behaviour, or at the very least, rethink it…

Not happy!

The Roku prerelease version is showing some hope for us.
All of my RA rows disappeared.
When adding them back I was given the cjoice of adding the current TV library of all TV libraries. Same for Movie libraries.
So, there is hope.

Nice!

As mentioned earlier, I know I am pretty late to this party, but I think I might just sleep a little better tonight because of this

Thanks :+1:

Does it add them all back in consolidated together?

Yes. You have to do it in Manual Home mode.

I’m confused. So this was reverted or no? I am on Android TV. Previously had 1 Continue Watching and 1 On Deck on my home screen. Plus a shared server Continue Watching and On Deck. Multiple libraries on each server, but they all consolidated into these single continue watching or on deck streams. Stayed nice and tidy, easy to quickly go back into watching what I had previously been watching. Now I cant do that?

Now the only way to get the Continue Watching or On Deck to show content from all my libraries is to let it automatically manage my home screen, but then I get like 12 sections I care nothing about nor can I add the stuff from the shared server. If I turn off auto manage but change nothing, suddenly the Continue Watching and On Deck stops combining everything. No content from the other libraries shows up at all in Continue Watching or On Deck. Only stuff from one movie and one tv show library shows. I cant get the content from any others to show up, despite going into those libraries and them having Continue Watching feeds with content on them. I even tried removing all content on my home screen, going into the missing library, managing that hub and selecting to add Continue Watching to my home screen. I go to check and its still only showing content from the OTHER single library, not even the one I just selected.

Is this as intended?

Note, this is only on my Android TV. I checked desktop apps as well as browser and those are working the old way just fine.

I can’t believe that after 2 months we still see several rows for libraries if I try to order this manually now I have
-Recently Added TV
-Recently Added TV
-Recently Added Movies
-Recently Added Movies
-Recently Added Movies
Could you guys please stop fixing what is working ?

Hi, thanks for providing the screenshot is this currently available to all as for me its still labelled ā€œRecently Added Moviesā€ for all movie libraries, and ā€œRecently Added Tv Showsā€ for TV shows on both the web app and my android TV nvidia shield app, but on my phone it looks like it does on your screenshot.

Is there a way to make this unified on all platforms my end?

Dave,
I like collections and use them for some things, but I have to keep the kids stuff separate from the rest and I can’t restrict viewing by collection, so I have to keep those in separate TV and Movie libraries. I think the best option here would be for plex to have an option in settings that would combine or separate the recently added items for a library type, or make the recently added list display in the order of which one actually has the most recently added items, so the newest content is always at the top.
Here’s my list of libraries image

Hi @DaveBinM - Unfortunately this statement just cannot ring true, as the vast majority of users who have 4K content, will very likely keep that content in a different library.

Why?

Because of the vast majority of users who have 4K content do not have an internet connection that will support sharing that content, and because the general rule of thumb is… ā€œNever transcode 4K contentā€, all of that 4K content is kept in a separate library to ensure that it is not shared with remote users.

Edit: I guess I actually AM done for a while…I just reinstalled the november apk (8.9.0.21537) and I didn’t know whether to cry tears of joy or do a cartwheel once it loaded up. So I did both! I’ve got google play store auto-updates off now and. I. Cannot. Stop. Smiling!!! Probably a little trickier for my 45+ followers to follow suit, most of who aren’t too technically literate. But I’m happy with Plex again for the first time in what feels like forever.

Other recommendations for fixing things at Plex that people will try to claim ā€œaren’t brokenā€:

  1. It’s annoying that all my movie posters are right side up…can we get a few to display sideways or upside down? (with no option to fix)
  2. A fun little random audio track selector that chooses ANY track but my preferred english (with no way to turn off)
  3. TV show theme music playing/looping over the entirety of the episodes themselves. (with no option to turn off)
  4. The option to download/sync files but just have every file turn out to be the Rick Roll video (with no option to delete the files or fix)
  5. In honor of Valentine’s Day, maybe a RomCom movie collection that plays the brown note about 15-20 minutes into the films (with no option to remove)

These just a few awesome features I’m sure everyone is asking for and I’m sorry if I stepped on the toes of any feature roll outs you guys were about to do! Of course, the most important thing with all of these is that you give them no option to correct or roll back…but you already knew that

I’ll try back in 6-12 months…godspeed to everyone until then.

brilliant!!!

you sound as fed up with plex now as myself, now seriously scoping out alternatives and will be jumping this rotting ship when i do

this new home is truly a discomfort. very very confused, before it was much easier to choose the program to watch. now it’s a mess !.

I hope we can give the server owner how to show their friends home before they throw the remote out the window.

There’s a way, let the user choose to combine libraries or not

yess i agree, now ā€œcontinue watchingā€ does not display movies on the apps (android). the server shows all, but apple seems fine. i have 3 movie lines showing on my home screen. i manually remove the ones I don’t want, and keep what I do. this causes my movies not to show on ā€œcontinue watchingā€ agreeing with ā€œstratos99kingzā€ it was fine before, this is so annoying.

I’m running Emby alongside Plex and I must say, in a lot of ways it’s better than Plex. I’ve been bouncing between the two for months now. This latest brainfart of a development from Plex may have just pushed over to the other side for good. Goodbye plex pass.

THIS RIGHT HERE!!!^^^

You dont just take away features like that. And not only did you just remove what is clearly alot of peoples preferred way to have their recently addeds, but the new split feature doesnt even work!!!
Anytime I try to remove a recently added in the manual set-up, not matter what I choose it removes the top one, not the one I chose further down the list. So I wipe them all and try to add the ones I want. Add the first RA Movies, no problems. Try to add a second… nothing. It will not let me add a second RA Movies/TV after I have added one from another library.
Having a combined RA for TV and Movies is qhat we are used to. You dont just go and pull the rug out from under us and change it without any warning.
I get Plex email. I never saw any ā€œhere are some features we are looking to implement. Tell us what you thinkā€ before you changed it. You just did it.
And who are these people that asked for these changes??? I certainly wasnt asked to participate in these talks or even made aware of them. Seems the same is true for most of your customer base.

Encourage all you want, it doesn’t mean you force your customers down a line that you want and they dont!
You want every individual customer to do all this work setting up collections, when you could just simply give us the option of having the combined feature that we have already had for so long?!?!?
Collections only male sense if you want to split your media up in to genres and stuff like that, but does not work for people like me.
For instance… I have my movies split up into 3 libraries- 720p, 1080p, 4k. All 2 are on different hdds on my comp and one is even on a seperate server connected via lan directly to my comp.
This is the setup I want. It easy and simple and works… well untill you guys made the choice for us to change that and now it doesn’t.

Having the conbined feature is not only what we are used to, but apparently your forums clearly state that it is preferred by alot of us.
And example of how this works for me-
My homescreen consists of my CW at the top, then OD, the RAM, the RATV. Thats it and thats the way I like it.
Towarda the end of last year I bought, ripped and encoded the entire Alien series to date. Unfortunately out of all 6, 2 of the movies are not available in 4k, only 1080. So it was the first 2 in 4k, the next 2 in 1080 and the 2 prequels in 4k again.
Before when it was combined I had the all added in order so they showed up in my RAM that way and were easy to find to watch. We managed to watch 2 of the 4k’s before all these changes and my home screen became a giant mess.
And now… just looking at my plex home screen makes me not even want to use it anymore. I mean… why bother if you guys are just going to keep taking away features that take minutes to set up and make it simple and easy to use for feature that takes hours to setup amd make it all more confusing???
You guys wanna add features… fine. Go right ahead. But dont take ones away that people depend on. Give us the option to have one or the other and THEN down the road ask your customer base how the new features are going and whether people still use the old combined feature. If alot of people say yes, then keep it. If the majority say no, then make a plan to phase ot out AFTER you told your customer base you plan to do so. Like I said… I get your emails. There was no heads up.
It also helps to have both features running at the same time in instances like we have now where the old feature is gone and the new feature is just buggy and doesn’t actually work!

As for the merge of OD and CW… I dont mind that so much, you would have to make some UI changes to make that work, because as it stands atm it would not.
You have an orange border that circles the object you are currently on. Well this border cuts off almost all of the (again orange) bar that shows how far you are thru the episode and thus making it extremely difficult to see. You would need to change how this is displayed to clearly show the user if an episode is partway watched or is a fresh episode.

I should probably end my rant here, but hopefully it does its job and makes some headway to see the combined RA feature reinstated and a much better feature rollout protocol used by you guys in the future.
