Recently added fiasco

I posted this once and had the thread closed with a referral to a different thread about a (to me) totally different topic: continue watching/on deck. This is STRICTLY about the proliferation of separate recently added lists that have, without warning OR CONSENT, replaced the previous single list of each type that collected from ALL libraries that were currently visible. Here’s my original post, again: (note the distinct lack of any references to the topic of the suggested replacement thread)

This morning I upgraded to PMS version 1.21.1.3795 (on Windows 10). I am using the web client from a 2nd Win10 machine in Firefox and after the upgrade I no longer have a single list for “Recently Added Movies” and “Recently Added TV” … instead I appear to have separate list for every since separate library, and all of the lists have the exact same name . I have several issues with this:

  • I would prefer to at least have an option to go back to the unified ‘Recently Added’ lists for each media type.
  • If the option for a unified list is refused, then it is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL for each of the lists to identify the library it is reporting! This IS NOT AN OPTION .
  • If an option exists to choose the sequence for the multiple recently added lists within the clients, I could not find it. This is also an important feature.
  • I may be alone, but I would REALLY like an option to specify what “recently” actually means. One of the lists of “recently” added items shows the most recent as being added three years ago ! Yes, it is the most recent in the library , but I would prefer to have it not listed at all .

You’re not alone.

You are definitely not alone on this.

I am running Version 1.21.1.3830 and I do NOT have this issue. I see recently added movies and recently added TV. So perhaps try upgrading and see if your issue is resolved?

Are you using Manual Home settings?
If you use Automatic you will probably see the issue.

Just turned on automatic and I do not see the issue.

I have it in the following order:
On Deck
Recently added movies
Recently added tv shows
Tis The Season
Recent Play Lists
Keep watching (for the plex movies and tv)
Plex Picks of the Week

That’s it and i have 12 different libraries

Are all of your libraries set to be included in Home?

Now running 1.21.1.3830 and the foolish proliferation of recently added lists continues to clutter the screen – and confuse my only users: my 80 year old parents – on both Roku and FireTV. In the web app, I was able to select the manual configuration to [[apparently] return to the single version of the lists, one for each media type. I have not had any luck finding or using a similar setting in the Roku/FireTV apps.

Most of my libraries are included on the home screen, but the set is different for different users. That wasn’t a problem in the past, if it is one now, then something has been broken.

I notice that the manual setting is really, REALLY not what I expect it to be. I EXPECT manual to allow these things:

  • Reorder any of the items shown on the AUTOMATIC setting
  • Show/Hide any of the items shown on the AUTOMATIC setting
  • Show/Hide any of the “Plex supplied” items

I WANT the manual setting to allow me to do these things, to:

  • Combine/split the recently added lists on my own terms, the best possible would allow me to create a sort of “recently added collection” of libraries (or perhaps other collections?)

However, that is NOT what I get. Instead, when I switch from automatic to manual:

  • All of the separated ‘recently added’ lists go away
  • One recently added list for each media type appears
  • I can reorder items
  • I CANNOT choose which items to show/hide

So manual allows changes to a completely different home screen than the one used in automatic mode! Sorry, but that’s stupid.

At least there is a library identifier (in small print, at the END of the label where it is easy to overlook) in some of the clients. But the web client still has many ‘recently added’ lists and not a single one has a library id tag like I see in the Roku/FireTV apps – that makes it more than confusing: IT IS USELESS.

Is this on Plex Web?

On the local web app that comes bundled with the server, the multiple recently added sections don’t show up in either managed or automatic mode. They are all combined. If you use the hosted app (https://app.plex.tv/desktop#), “Recently added” is split between the number of Libraries you have. The splitting happens on all of the apps I have - Roku, Android TV, etc. in automatic mode too.

They are.

Nurbles,

In the Roku app, login and select your user icon at the top left. Select reset Home Customization.

Then take the step by step walkthrough to select which libraries you want to see on the menu.
Then when done with that, looking at the main screen, highlight a library then move the cursor to the left and select the dots.
Select Disable (Manually Manage).
It will take you back to the main screen
Follow the steps above again (select library and then the dots)

Select Manage Hubs
Select which hubs you want to keep and which ones you don’t.

Raazer,

OK, the “Manage Hubs” screen has only one button that allows me to edit the order of the hubs. There are NO hubs listed, but I could (I assume) change the order if there were any.

I have tried using the “Restore default home screen” option, but it remains empty. I cannot find any way to ADD (or remove) hubs to the manual home screen.

If you doubt, I can post photos of the screens. The only way I can find to have ANYTHING on the home screen on my Roku is to be in automatic home screen management mode – which has gone insane.

At least on the web app I can choose manual to get a small list of useful hubs (and some strange, sometimes duplicated crap, like the multiple “'Tis the Season!” entries), but even there, it is impossible to show/hide items, only move them up/down.

While it may be great to add features for some new customers, it is not great to make the product almost unrecognizable to those of us who bought lifetime Plex passes because we liked the features that existed at the time we paid. We already lost my most use feature – the plug-ins for channels like CBS, the CW, etc. and now we are losing our home screen, too? Please return what I like when I bought this thing!

Next thing you know, they will automatically insert commercials into our streams. You know, to help us find things we need. Merry !@#@* Christmas, existing users.

Have you tried deleting the app from the Roku? I am looking at my Roku app, and where it says Home, if I move the cursor left, I get the 3 dots. I click there and I get the option to manage automatically (if set to manual) or it says Edit Home and I have the option of Continue with Automatic or Disable (manually manage).

I select manually manage and then go through the steps above with the dots. I get a menu that says Manage Home (automatically), Mange Hubs, Restore Default Home Screen.

I then select manage hubs and I get the following:

Edit list order (at the top of the screen)
Continue Watching
On Deck
Recently added Movies
Recently added TV
Recently added Music
Recently added photos
Recently Added Videos
'Tis The season
"tis The Season (i have multiple because i have multiple libraries that i have a Christmas movie collection in)
Recent Playlists
My Headlines-News
On Deck-Podcasts
Recommended Podcasts
Continue Watching Movies & TV (on Plex)
Holiday Therapy-Movies & TV (on Plex)
On Deck-Web Shows
Film & TV - Web shows
Featured Channels-Live TV (on Plex)

If you don’t see anything like that, it sounds to me like you’ve got something else going on. I have 5 Roku’s in my house and 3 apple TV’s and all of them are very similar in the menu options and what they show…

I would also check in the web app and make sure you can manage it the same way.

In the web app: at the top right of the page there is the pencil, click it
It gives you the option to “Manage Home Automatically” if you are in manual mode. There is also a “reset customization” option of that same window that opens. Also from that window, if you re in manual mode, you can shuffle or delete unwanted library listings.

If you say reset customization, it gives you the option to re-select your pinned sources (Libraries). That will put you in to automatically manage mode. If you select to manually manage, you can then select your hubs and order them however you wish.

In this screen right here, on the web app, you can remove hubs by going to the far right and a red x will appear. Click that and it will remove it.

To get everything back, select the Reset Customization option and then go back through the steps.

TV and movies should have combined recently added by video category as it always had (TV / Movie)

Hard to scroll thought all category recently added. I have like 20

That screen is EMPTY and shows NO HUBS. Even if I had hidden them all in the past and forgotten (I did not) I would still expect to see SOMETHING listed. Also, it may be just me but I find invisible controls to be unusable – there are no red X’s on your screen shot and even you use the phrase “will appear.” Heck, maybe if I navigate Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A then the button I want that will restore my Roku to work the way the universe intended will appear! Who knows?

Anyway, after much random poking around and clicking on apparently unrelated things, something I clicked brought a complex, cumbersome screen that looked like it would allow me to go through everything, one at a time, and manually add them to my home screen. A Roku (or FireTV and probably most similar devices) has an interface that is simply far, far too clunky, weak. and painfully slow to support the level of customization necessary to use things as they seem to be now.

We need another NEW feature in the WEB CLIENT: The ability to configure the interface for our account on any of the hardware platforms we use. This would allow the FULL POWER of a PC Browser to be employed while configuring these increasingly complex interfaces that are so far beyond what is sensible to manage on the devices themselves. The Roku folks seem to love adding new features instead of supporting old ones, so maybe they’ll consider this.

I have been having the same issue, and it is FRUSTRATING. Every single movie, every single TV episode, are all showing up as “Recently added”. Note that I switched from the web version to the Mac version, and that problem went away… until today. Now I have 300+ “recently added” movies, many of which are years old. There seems to be no way to tell the app what “recently” means, and Plex seems to be very silent on this.

Having this issue on the Web version, the Mac Version, the Windows version… so far (knock on wood) my Roku is ok. I’m sure they’ll screw that up as well.

looks like nobody is listening, i love plex, had it from start and never complained BUT!!

many years ago i’ve created like 20-25 categories for my movies / tv/ documentaries / standup / 4k / 3d / etc …

NOW for last 3-6 months EASY, got tons of recently added on each device, when before there were always TWO (1 for tv shows 1 for movies combines all cartegories) which was perfect !!! Now multiple devices are f*kd… cant even sort out properly on ipads etc :frowning: shocking lads :frowning:

I’m up over 40 categories now after being a Plex user since 2012. The lag on my Plex home screen on both my and other people’s web browsers is crazy for having to load up all these…and the family/friends on the android/apple clients are confused and frustrated trying to browse. This is not somethings that “making more collections” will fix if that’s the only suggestion…I have stuff like youtube clips auto-downloading to their respective directories and auto-matching without the need to go in an individually edit each file. I know I’m probably just yelling at clouds here but please at least give us the option to switch back to normal on the server side. I have honestly never had this big of a problem with a change in 8+ years. Huge step backwards.

This is insanely annoying, especially since each duplicate of recently added Movies or TV Shows just shows the same exact content as the others. What is the point of separating them if it doesn’t even display the content properly. I’ve just removed the duplicates by manually managing my home screen items, but why is this happening in the first place.
