I've just got a Raspberry and been learning about Rasplex. I'm a complete novice in all concerning this world, but i finally managed to install Rasplex in the Raspi, and it works!
But... when i try to play some of my old movies, they don't show any video, just audio. I noticed that it happens with files in AVI format, downloaded around 10-11 years ago. I can perfectly watch these movies where i have the Plex Server, but not in the TV with Rasplex. Also, Rasplex works fine with other videos (AVI or other formats).
Any clue what can be wrong or what am i doing wrong?
Still no luck with Rasplex. However, I decided to give Plexbmc a try, and if I enable the forced transcoding option it works perfectly for all the movies (without enabling this option, same than Rasplex: some old AVI don't show image, only audio).
So i'm guessing this is a matter of transcoding...? Is there any option in Rasplex to force transcoding?
Alternatively, you can enable to force transcoding on the local network in the Rasplex Preferences.
In 9.9.15 or 9.9.16 under Network --> Quality --> Local Video Quality choose your desired bandwidth instead of "Direct Play".
In stable versions (using an older version of Plex) there is a setting that says "force transcoding on local network". I was never successful in having that work though, but it might just be me.
Just an fyi, I just found some older avi files and noticed that when they play they have audio only. It turns out they are in msmpeg4 which is a Microsoft version of the mpeg4 codec. Now mpeg4 encoded avi files play fine but msmpeg4 files do not as the raspberry pi doesn't support msmpeg4 just mpeg4. I'm trying to figure out where the plex server keeps the raspberry pi profile on the server or if rasplex sends something to the server to say what file types it handles natively and see if i can modify that so that the plex server always transcodes msmpeg4 files to something the rasplex box can understand. If anyone knows where to look for this or has done this before i would appreciate a heads up on where the file is.
I have a feeling that those files use the MS VC1 codec. if that’s the case it might be worth investing (1,2GBP) in the appropriate license for the Pi. AFAIK there is no specific profile for Rasplex as it implements the standard Plex home theater software.
