Opening deep folder in Photos: "Something went wrong, An unexpected error occurred"

Server Version#: 1.40.4.8679
Player Version#: 4.135.2 (web)
Player Version#: 10.19.2.1191 (Android)

Good day,

I have a folder called ‘photos’ on my Unraid server that contains a folder called ‘Shared’. Within this folder are further folders (e.g. “Annual Best Of”) within which are further folders (e.g. “2024”).

The location ‘Shared’ is added a library source of photos.

When I go into the Photos library on Plex web I see a row of folder icons (“Annual Best Of”). This is as I expect. I can then go into these icons to see further folders (“2024”), this is as I expect. I then go into those folders and I get the error “Something went wrong, An unexpected error occurred”. I can then load no other libraries and have to close the tab and open it again.

When I go into that same folder on my Android phone via the Plex app, it all works as expected: I can get into the folder-in-a-folder and open all images as expected.

What I have tried: DBRepair script (no change).
What I have tried: Remove all images and reindex them as a new library source. No change.

It’s a difficult one as the system works on my phone, but not on the web. So is the issue on the server side, or the web app side?

What information can I provide to help fix this?

Interesting question. Maybe we can make some headway grabbing log files.
Two clients & one works. So probably not permissions.
The hosted web app is the most fully featured app. So it’s good that one works.
Any way you could try an iOS app, desktop, or HTPC app?
Too tired atm to try to replicate this.

This problem is widespread and clearly a bug. Everyone I know who hosts photos on a Plex server is seeing it - macOS/Windows serves, and every client. It’s been evident for a couple of months now

I have found a surprisingly easy way to trigger the two behaviours- dev tools.

Open a standard Chrome window, go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/, and open devtools (F12)
Open Photos > folder
Open sub-folder: “Something went wrong”

Now refresh the page and toggle the device toolbar and set any device (e.g. iPad Pro)

Open Photos > folder (same behaviour as before)
Open sub-folder… loads as expected.

There are also errors in the Console log:

I have rolled back to Server Version 1.40.3.8555 with Player Version (Web) 4.129.1 and this issue is NOT present.

This issue is still present in Server version 1.40.5.8897 and player version (Web) 4.133.0.

Player (Web) Version 4.137.1
with
Server Version 1.40.5.8921

Appears to have fixed the issue, though I can’t see it mentioned in the patch notes.

This worked for a bit then the problem returned. No solution yet!

It hasn’t for me, I even tried to re-create the library, I did note that the Photos Library has an option to choose an agent on the newer versions where the old version doesn’t, is that the cause?

I have gone back to my old version that works.

I have the exact same problem with the error message “Something went wrong an unexpected error occurred” when I click deeper into my photo library folders. When this error occurs, all I have to do is refresh the page and the correct directory reappears until I click again and the error message reappears. My server is on Synology Station DS423+ in version PlexMediaServer-1.41.0.8994. The problem occurs on all web browsers and user accounts. In mobile applications and in the Samsung TV Tizen application, this problem does not occur. In my opinion, a serious error that makes it difficult to use the photo library. Please support and treat it as a priority.

I’m having the same problem as well, and have been for months. Just updated to PlexMediaServer- 1.41.0.8994 PlexWeb-4.136.1 to see if it went away and it hasn’t. I’m running in Docker behind Nginx. The android mobile app loads the folder just fine.
I click into the deep level photos folder and see “Something went wrong”. Refresh, login, and the folder loads just fine.
I too see the following JS error:

TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'getCollection')
    at metadata/metadataList/deselectAllMetadataListItems (main-8792-35b85b3fbfbb9552c6ca-plex-4.136.1-8affb58.js:2:779374)

same issue for me. I just posted about it here: Plex Photos - Library Something went wrong. An unexpected error occurred - #5 by Siddiqi1

same issue in my clients (Windwos, Web, excepting apps at TVs),
My workaround for the web UI and Windows App:
klick at the settings button and after that go back to previous page
(this workaround avoids re-login)
hopefully the engineer assigned (statement in ) is fast for resolving the BIG PROBLEM…
thanks in advance

Do you have a timeline for a fix please?

I’m sorry but i don’t have insights to plex engineering…
But I’m very angry now as nobody at plex is solving the problem since many weeks now…

I’m running Version 1.41.4.9399. I’m a plex pass subscriber.

I am having the very same issue. Did a scan of my photos directory and now when I go into a specific folder I get “Something went wrong - an unexpected error occurred”. I have been using Plex photos for years. Clearly this is a major issue that a lot of people are posting about.

Please post an ETA on when we can expect a fix for this. This thread goes all the way back to last August!

Still no fix for this. I am seeing this in the most recent version (4.145.1) . It’s March 2025 (last day of Feb). Still not fixed.

Sadly I found this thread - it’s known but not fixed.

Happy that it’s not just me.

Plex, please fix this.

Hello everyone! Same here, bug exists. Tried update to last version 4.145.1 but no luck.

  "type": "[object Error]",
"stack": "TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'getCollection')\n at metadata/metadataList/deselectAllMetadataListItems (

Looks like this was ack’d by Plex in this thread: Plex Photos - Library Something went wrong. An unexpected error occurred - Plex Players / Desktop Players - Plex Forum

No ETA on a fix yet.

Still no fix and now it is worse for anyone not updating their server as the latest version of the Android App does not work the the last version that this issue was not present.

Fixed: Plex-Web Photo Library sometimes gives "Something Went Wrong" error - #41 by glenns_and_roses
