Server Version#: 1.40.3.8530 (running on Ubuntu 19.04 bare metal)
Player Version#: 4.131.1
This does not happen with Plex Android App, nor on my Roku Plex App.
This started happening two days ago (I’ve been running this version for a couple weeks, no updates were recently done), but is not consistent. When viewing my photo library in folder mode, I click on a folder and it will sometimes give me a “Something went wrong…” error, at which point, I can no longer select anything until I force a refresh in my browser (Chrome ver. 125.0.6422.142 64bit running on Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2 OS Build 22631.3593). If I refresh right after getting the message, the contents of that folder will appear, and I can view the images normally.
For troubleshooting, I tried other clients as mentioned above, and was not able to recreate the issue. I did get the latest PlexDBRepair utility (v1.06.02) from GitHub and it found no problems. I went through and did an “auto” using the tool, and it made no difference. The files on the filesystem are properly named and permissions are correct.
Edit: I should note it does not matter which folder in my library I click on to recreate the issue. My other media libraries (TV, Home Movies (other video), Movies, Music) all work fine, even in Folder view.
If there is any further information needed, please let me know.
Server Version: 1.40.2.8395 running on Debian 12 LXC/Proxmox
Plex Web Version: 4.131.1
I’m also seeing this issue. It happens for me whenever I try to click on a folder in my Photos library that is more that one level deep. For example, if my photo directory structure has years at the first level, and then months under the years, then I can click into the years repeatedly with no problem. The first time I try to click on a month under any year then I get the “Something went wrong” error.
This only occurs in Plex Web. Plex for Win, Android, and Roku are fine.
I updated Plex server to 1.40.3.8555 yesterday, which, interestingly enough, said it had an “update” to the web client to a previous version (4.129.something), but after installing the update, my web client is still at 4.131.1, so nothing has changed. The error still occurs.
I am also seeing this issue, I came here to report it, glad to see it’s already been reported. As mentioned above, the error occurs when clicking on folders greater than one level deep in a Photo album
For me, the issue is occurring in the Plex web browser, and in the Plex Windows Desktop app (Version 1.94.1.155-f1e7f457, running on Windows 10).
The Android app and the LG app don’t seem to have this issue, I’m able to navigate subfolders and load photos that live within them with no issue from those apps.
Same issue for me. This started happening after the 1.94 windows client update. I reinstalled 1.84 and disabled automatic updates for the time being. That should keep things working OK until an update is released with a fix in it. As others have mentioned, this does not affect other clients. My Roku instances are fine and I can also use the web UI without issue.
@macromark, which version of the Web UI are you on? It seems like Web v4.131.1 is the broken one, but you say yours works, so I’m wondering if you’re on a lower version of that as well?
I’ve had the exact same issue in my Plex Windows desktop client since updating recently. Very frustrating.
I also run Plex clients on an Apple TV box, an XBox and a Chrome browser. None of these other clients have any such issue. It doesn’t seem like it’s a server issue.
Good news - Plex for Win app is now working with v1.95.2.166-92c7babe, though the release notes don’t have any indication of a fix in this latest version. Plex Web v4.132.2 was also just released, and no longer has this problem.
I just upgraded as well. Plex-web is now 4.132.2 (server upgraded to 1.40.4.8598), but the problem still exists on my web client. @hokierulz, which browser are you using? I’m still using the same version of Chrome as listed in my original post. May try another browser at some point…
I’ve installed Version 1.95.2.166-92c7babe of the Windows client (on Windows 10). There’s definite improvement. It used to be the case that thumbnails wouldn’t appear for high level directories if all images in the directory were sorted into sub-directories. Now a photo library scan finds the images in the subdirectories and chooses a thumbnail for the high level directory.
When I click on a high level directory, all sub-directories now have thumbnails as well (before they were blank)
However, I still get the error when I click on a sub-directory, so I’m unable to navigate the sub-directory photos.
All of the above changes seem to be the same for the web client now as well
Perhaps there is something I can do on my end to fix what remains of the issue? Re-scanning the library doesn’t fix the navigation, but it does get the thumbnails back, so the scanner clearly sees the photos now
Seeing other’s experiences I rechecked, and did find a failure scenario when trying to access photo subfolders when running Plex Web in Chrome on Win10, though Plex Web was working in Chrome on my Win11 instance. I found Chrome needed a restart on Win10 to finish an update to Version 126.0.6478.115 (Official Build) (64-bit). Once updated the photo subfolder issue went away.
Based on this experience, it is worth checking to see if the latest Chrome version (126.0) helps anyone.
My environment that is currently working for photo subfolders for both Plex Web and Plex for Win:
Plex Server v1.40.3.8555 on Debian 12 LXC/Proxmox
Plex Client on both Win 10 and Win 11: v1.95.2.166-92c7babe
Plex Web on both Win 10 and Win 11: v4.132.2
Chrome on both Win10 and Win11: 126.0.6478.115 (Official Build) (64-bit)
I’m on Plex for Mac Version 1.95.3.175-dd94cbd1
Server (Linux) Version 1.40.3.8555
And I’m also having the exact same problem. Can’t go deeper than one subfolder.
My iOS app works just fine. But either using my browser or the macOS app shows the error. The ONLY way I’ve been able to make it work in my browser, for some reason, is by accessing my plex server through my custom domain… because app.plex.tv doesn’t work either.
EDIT: also, accessing my server directly by typing its ip address works, so it seems that it’s just app.plex.tv that isn’t working.
Just upgraded to server version 1.40.4.8626 (still running on Ubuntu as I mentioned in my OP) which included an upgrade to plex-web version 4.132.3. Error still occurs.
Double-checking my Chrome, I’m on version 126.0.6478.127 (Official Build) (64-bit), which is a slightly higher version than @hokierulz listed. I’m running Windows 11 (fresh reboot), but mine is still not functioning. Have not had a chance to test on other browsers, and I don’t use the Windows app, so haven’t tested that at all.
I’m now right with @AngelKnightNY. While last week I wasn’t able to recreate this issue, I just reproduced the problem in Plex for Win on both Win 10 and Win 11, and also on Plex Web (in both Chrome and Brave).
It doesn’t happen consistently, but if I click around in Photo folders long enough in either Plex for Win or Plex Web it will eventually cause the “Something Went Wrong” error.
Similar issues: I’ve got Plex Media Server Version 1.40.3.8555 (running on a Windows 11 client), when I view photo libraries from Plex For Windows Client 1.95.3.175 (june 21 2024), I have this issue as well. Interestingly, when I try to view these same photo libraries from the same windows client, but using chrome to https:app.plex.tv/desktop, it works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn’t. Just started noticing this today, as I am just setting up a new laptop (Asus G16 G605MY: A great laptop btw) (to use as a client of the Media server, amongst other things).
I get the same issue, on my Windows Plex Client (not on my iPhone Plex Client) but at least in a Windows browser, such as Edge or Firefox, as opposed to the Plex Windows Client, I can workaround the issue.
I have my own custom domain for my router, and using this works fine. This is the best workaround.
However, after logging in to plex.tv, navigating down the folder structure of the Photos Library, and fully refreshing the web page in Edge or Firefox, gets rid of the error, and allows you to reach and do a slideshow of the Photos at the bottom level.
Going to another folder, requires more refreshes, but it does work, which is interesting, if nothing else.
I have this identical problem too. Refreshing at a folder level does the trick. Many thanks to those who gave the workaround and hope that Plex solves this in an update.
