Opening Plex app on server computer stops recording

Server Version#: 1.25.8.5663
Player Version#: 1.42.1.2926-
I have a server on an iMac M1 running V 12.3 Monterey, and using the Plex App for playback as well. Periodically, I have a problem where while a show is recording, I open up the player to look at something else, and then later find that my recording stops while the show is still in progress. In this instance I had successfully recorded NCIS, and was recording NCIS: Hawaii, when the recording stopped 8 minutes in. Is there anything I can do to accidentally stop the recording? I’m attaching a log, and do have the db available if needed. Thanks.

As a followup, I was watching a movie on Plex.app tonight when a live TV recording was scheduled. It started fine and then also stopped after 8 minutes, just like the other show mentioned.

Try the beta 1.25.9.5673, Plex was crashing while doing the ad detection for NCIS.

Thanks! Will give it a try.

@pl_5309 Happened again on 1.25.9.5673. Recording Masterchef and forgot it was recording and just opened my Plex player app on macOS, and that seems to have stopped the recording.

One thing to check, do you have the tuner setting “CONVERT VIDEO WHILE RECORDING” turned on? If so try turning that off.

Your networking may also be contributing to this as Plex is seeing network changes frequently. You appear to have 4 ethernet ports with 2 connected but improperly. Unless you have a switch that supports Link Aggregation and both the switch and Mac are configured for it, only connect one.

The actual failures are two transcoder exits, one is the recording and the other is the client followed by the Plex Tuner Service exit and restart. It’s possible the Plex Tuner Service is failing and terminating the tuner connection or vice versa. This is one Plex support will have to review.

I appreciate your reply.

You ask about “CONVERT VIDEO WHILE RECORDING”. I have the HDHomerun Connect. Under DVR Settings I don’t see that option.

I have my iMac Server connected into a Netgear GS308 Switch, This has 8 ports, with 4 in use. 1- Linksys Velop Router 2-iMac 3-Brother Printer 4-Connection to 16 port switch in our basement. What do you mean “2 are connected improperly”?

Also, I haven’t heard of link aggregation before, and the 8 port switch brochure doesn’t mention it.

This problem happens while a recording is ongoing and I just open up Plex. I don’t open anything related to live TV or the program being recorded. As usual, thanks for your reply.

The “CONVERT VIDEO WHILE RECORDING” is under the Tuner settings of the DVR page (Left most column).

Your logs show two interfaces connected.

Finally found the setting in the popup that came after clicking on the gear. Anyhow, it was set to off. I see the network interfaces you mention. Obviously .0.0.1 is the Local host. 0.20 is ethernet to the iMac and 0.21 is Wi-Fi to the iMac. I have Wi-Fi on only to get airdrop functionality from my iPhone to iMac, with Ethernet listed as the first network interface in Mac System Preferenes/Network… I can easily turn off the Wi-Fi of course if you think that could be causing a problem. But why would opening up the Plex app on the iMac mess up the Server recording?

@pl_5309 Just to confirm to myself my problem, I started a recording in my Plex app, closed it, waited a short time and then just started the app again. That was enough to end the recording.

Logs attached… Wi-Fi is not active.

@pl_5309 and anyone else: Anything else I can test?

Overall there seems to be some instability in the Server and it is being worked on.

Clarify the issue a little more.

If it is Time Shifting a recording in progress kills the recording then this happens on some systems, is a known issue but until a fix is released Plex probably won’t comment.

If it is Running Plex for Mac on same machine as Server, when you exit the app or cancel playback whatever is recording is also cancelled then that is something new. If you can update the title to reflect that might grab more attention.

@pl_5309 I AM running Plex for Mac on my iMac-M1 server machine. Just opening the client app on the server machine immediately stops recording. By the way what do you mean by Time Shifting a recording in progress?

You start recording and after some time you start playback from the start.

The system starts recording automatically when the show starts. If I open the Plex app to the Home Screen and do nothing else, the recording stops. Sorry if I wasn’t clear before.

bump… Is there any more info I can provide?
