OpenPHT Tutorial Videos

There is a lot of information about OpenPHT out there, but it is scattered across various forums. When I put together an OpenPHT box for my Dad and mailed it off, I knew he would need help setting it up. This lead me to create a YouTube channel and start making tutorial videos. The three videos I have up now were designed to help a non-technical person set up and use OpenPHT with Plex Black.

My longer-term goal is to create a library of videos that average five minutes in length and provide concise information on specific topics (i.e. dealing with forced sub-titles, customizing Plex Black, building a music video library). I bought an Elgato screen capture device to avoid anymore cell phone photos of embedded interfaces, so I will soon be able to create better setup videos.

At this point, I would really appreciate any feedback you guys have. I would also appreciate any documentation you can point me at for really drilling down into the more advanced settings. I want this to become a good community resource. I cannot code, so this is my way of giving back.

First off, I think it’s cool you did this for your dad (and posting for others to benefit from).
I’m working my way through your vids now. I’m also a big proponent of making OPHT embedded machines.
I’ll shoot you some feedback once I’ve made my way though the 3 videos. The one thing I can think of off the top of my head (because it took me a little extra trial/error) was setting up suspend and wake using a harmony remote and tweaking the key settings. In either case, nice work.

Thanks. I am going to re-do the setup videos on Monday after I get an Elgato video capture device hooked up in my main system, so I can do the video directly on my embedded machine. I’m also going to script it out this time to make it tighter and more professional. The target time for my videos is five minutes. I may break audio and video setup into separate tutorials.

I am getting another Wetek Hub to leave in my office connected to the Elgato and my laptop, so I can do more tutorials. I’m planning on walking through the process of getting the image onto a microSD card. Then I will switch to the Wetek and walk through the entire configuration process. This will have to be a series of videos to keep them short. I am debating on whether I want to do a series on Aeon Nox or if I will just do Plex Black and call it a day. Aeon Nox is considerably more complex.

I think a lot more people would go this route if they realized 1) it’s not as complicated as they might think and 2) it’s a lot nicer than running it on another OS.

I wouldn’t worry about Aeon Nox in terms of the tutorial. I personally love the skin, but if the idea is to get someone new used to opht, stay with black as the use case. Keep it as simple as possible. Once they’re comfortable with OPHT, it’s inevitable they’ll try out Aeon Nox on their own to see which they prefer.

I just setup libreelec with PKC box in my office simply for the live tv option (using an HDhomerun). I’ve been surprised how well PKC works with Kodi.

PKC is also on the list. I kind of agree with you about Aeon Nox. Next week, I reshoot the setup videos after my Wetek Hub arrives. I’m also working on a comprehensive Blu-ray Ray ripping tutorial that covers MakeMKV, using MKVToolNix to fix forced subtitles and how to get around playlist obfuscation with a Blu-Ray player app and Windows Process Monitor.
