Hello. I am using openPHT on my mac mini and rasplex on my pi2. Recently I saw the embedded version of openPHT based on openelec and I don’t get it. Since the rasplex version is openPHT based on openelec what is the point of embedded version and what are the diferences?
Rasplex will only run on RPi0, RPi1,RPi2 and RPi3 and is optimised for that hardware.
OpenPHT Embedded will only run on x86 and x64, (PC/Mac) and is optimised for that hardware.
Both versions use OpenELEC (soon to be LibreELEC) and OpenPHT but Rasplex had progressed further than the last official PHT, in the next release both will share the same code base, as the majority of Rasplex code has now been backported into OpenPHT, but will still contain specific code relating to the hardware.
Correct, flash the embedded image to a USB stick, pop the USB stick in your computer, boot from USB stick, the installer will run, choose where to install.
In this context we should add that it’s possible to use USB drives/sticks for both the installer and the installed OpenPHT-Embedded system (but not the same drive for both). Thus it’s possible to test OpenPHT-Embedded on a PC with an existing OS, without making any changes to that OS or its boot method (except temporarily when booting from USB). You just need to be careful in telling the installer which destination drive to use, so that you specify the other USB drive rather than any internal HDD.

Wasn’t this already stated?

OpenPHT Embedded contains its own OS, you can run it from USB stick, SD card or hard drive.

Yes, it was stated that OpenPHT Embedded can run from a USB drive. But it was not emphasized that this applies to both the installer and the installed system, or that you need two separate USB drives to do it. This might not be obvious to some users. So my post above was just intended to clarify that aspect.
Download the installer, flash it to a USB stick, boot from the USB stick and the installer will run. Decide where you want to install OpenPHT, internal har drive/external hard drive/another USB stick and install. When finished reboot and select the drive you have installed to, hey presto - OpenPHT will be up and running, follow the first run wizard and the configure System Settings and Preferences.
How did you installed it on sd? Do I have to format it in other format than fat32? It’s not an option for me when I have to select a disk to install it. Also how can I boot every time to OpenPHT without having to use a keyboard to select a drive to boot from?

Download the installer, flash it to a USB stick, boot from the USB stick and the installer will run. Select the SD card and install. When finished reboot, to set the default boot volume hold the Option key down when rebooting to get the list of bootable drives, To set the default start-up volume, press Control and click on an arrow under the SD card, the upward arrow turns into a circular arrow, denoting default boot volume. When you turn on in future it will boot from the SD card.
Well after a lot of tries I couldn’t install openPHt embedded on SD card. I used 2 different sd’s but when I am asked to choose for a device to install on, SD card is not available as an option. Only usb devices and internal drive. Is there anyone who can explain how he managed to select SD card? I am trying to install on a mac mini latest version of hardware and software.
Is your SD card installed when you boot the installer?
As the Mac Mini doesn’t have an SD card slot, you must be using a USB adapter, are you sure this is working. If you are having to use a USB adapter then why not just use a USB stick instead?
