Opera TV is now VEWD, and Plex is no longer working!!!

Your procedure isn’t helpful. Read the thread. All of the details are in here.

We don’t need a way to install the App. The app is there. It doesn’t work.

I believe you bought a used TV if Plex was already in the favorites. Re-adding it should be simple by launching Opera TV, navigating left to the Apps section, navigating right so you’re able to scroll through the various apps, then navigating down. Plex is there, it just doesn’t work on a number of devices any more.

No it was brand new and as I and others have said, Opera is now Vewd and the store does not even have Plex now. i am not a newbie to these matters.

Hi folks.

I looked into your reports on a new Sony BDP-3700. Here’s what I’m seeing and what we’ve done so far.

I see the Plex app available after launching the Opera TV Store app from the blu-ray players home screen. I haven’t found a Plex app in the Sony menu system that displays after pressing the + icon on the home screen to add an app.

In the Opera TV Store the Plex application no longer launches correctly. The Opera TV Store asks me if I’d like to open “Internet Browser” and close the Opera TV Store. Selecting either the Yes or No option in the Opera TV Store prompt results in brokeness. This behavior is not correct. The Plex application should be launching directly into a chrome-less browser without any Opera TV Store prompts.

I’ve shared my findings with Opera TV/Vewd. We’re waiting for their feedback and fix.

“Opera TV browser itself doesn’t work on the devices that won’t load the Plex app.”
“Not a device firmware issue. Opera TV launches fine.”

Which is it? Does Opera TV work or not?

If Opera TV launches at all, then the procedure should work. It uses the hidden app called “URL Loader”, not the browser.

Do you need a Plex Premium membership to do this workaround?

I really advise folks to stay way from the URL Loader. It’s an entirely unsupported way of launching our application.

An inexpensive dedicated streaming device like a Chromecast, Fire TV Stick, Roku Stick, are considerably more enjoyable than jumping through hoops to experience Plex on Opera TV devices. These manufacturers support their hardware directly.

You all will do what you will. Just sharing some context from this side of the Internet.

Your experience exactly mirrors mine. Looking forward to seeing this get resolved.

So I tried opening the Opera (vewd) app last night on my Sony Blu Ray player (I noticed that it updated and plex was no longer a favorite app). Lo and behold, Plex is no longer an available app AT ALL! It has completely disappeared!Opera was a less than ideal way to view my files thru Plex to begin with and now it seems they have pulled it, rendering my DVD player functionality (for streaming purposes) a giant paperweight. (I still don’t understand Sony rationale…I can have plex on my (now archaic) PS3, but not my newer Blu Ray?

I have a SONY TV, model KDL-60W850B and have been using the PLEX app for years, and recently spent the money on a lifetime PLEX Pass because of how well everything has worked. Now I can not load the PLEX app at all… when I go to the Vewd (formerly Opera) store, the PLEX app isn’t even there…

Very disappointed and wondering what the return policy is for the PLEX Pass.

Just sharing an opinion here - My own personal experience has taught me to never rely on apps in smart TVs.
Most ‘smarts’ of TVs last, on average, 2-3 years before the manufacturer stops updating the app and or ‘OS’ of the TV.
However, I got gifted (at request) a Roku 2 XS in late 2012. 5 years later, though now relegated as a secondary room device due to having a Roku3, it still performs admirably for it’s age. I imagine at least another 2-3 years of decent usage at the least.
If / when a secondary box dies/is no longer supported/etc, you simply swap out the (normally less than $100 on sales/discount) box.
I don’t have to worry about my dumb no-internet 2008 65" 1080p LCD.

JamminR, I get it and will agree with the premise of what you’re saying. But, when you already HAVE a device, and have been relying on it for a length of time, to have the functionality ripped out from under you with no warning… That’s pretty crappy.

And, not for nothing, but we’re talking about DVD players here. No matter how good a streaming device like Roku may or may not be, it doesn’t play BluRay’s or DVD’s - and that’s still a necessary evil in many cases.

Alphajamie, this thread isn’t for you to inquire about getting a refund on your Plex Pass. Please take that up with the admins directly. We’re trying to track and hopefully fix an issue (that, admittedly, seems to affect you but on a different type of device).

@ember1205

  • Agreed and understood. My opinion is based on experience with older relatives that I was asked to support/research after they too had wool pulled out within a short time of their purchase. Perhaps Roku/ATV/gTV/FireTV should look at embedding themselves in more affordable consumer devices like BluRay/DVD players, instead of TVs that will normally last (hopefully) 15+ years when the ‘smarts’ are outsmarted in 2-5.
    I digress off topic. Apologies.
    Good luck fighting the good fight with smart TVs. I don’t lay any blame on Plex for this particular instance.

I don’t place any blame with Plex, either. I’m hoping that Plex has more insight into why there’s now an issue and can maybe work to correct it.

Personally, I -HATE- the concept of a “Smart TV” for the exact reasons that you’re citing. When I buy a TV, I’m making a purchase for a long-term item. And I shouldn’t be in a position to have to replace that device in about three years because CPU’s are stronger and there’s some new OS/APP/SERVICE/WHATEVER that won’t run in my current TV. I don’t understand the notion of dropping another $5k because a $40 part needs an upgrade.

Are there any Plex admins here or monitoring here that could benefit from additional information from us to possibly develop a remedy?

If anyone is counting how much of an impact this is, please add a +1 here. I also used the plex app on a Sony 43" for 2 years. And now it doesn’t work. Not thrilled with this.

Same here! 55-inch Sony Bravia KDL55W800B. Got the Vewd error mid-day Wednesday. I tried going directly to the /web/App location via the two available browsers, but this $900 online device can’t handle it! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@mattseeley

Wondering if you had gotten any feedback from VEWD as of yet, or if you might at least have a guess as to how long it might take to get a response.

Thanks for looking into this for us.

Any word? I love my chromecast, but I liked having a dedicated remote for plex vs using my phone.

@rdurdle - in the past 2 hours since the last post asking basically the same? No.
Plex is aware
Corporations like VEWD often don’t fix issues like this in such a short time.
As large as Opera was on so many devices, I’m betting Plex isn’t the only broken app.

Just adding that I’m also having this problem. I can use my Chromecast, but then I lose surround sound capabilities.

All - before you post - stop. Read this post.
First, this isn’t a Plex issue. Though Plex may need to work with VEWD to help fix it, VEWD broke Plex, not the other way around.
Second - Plex is aware.
Read this, from a Plex Employee - https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1539341/#Comment_1539341
They’ve contacted VEWD, the people that broke Plex.

There is absolutely no need to say “me too”. It won’t make it get fixed any faster.

I’m monitoring this thread in hopes @mattseeley or another employee announces a fix, as I have relatives with affected equipment. Every time you make a post, I get excited in hopes its good news.
When I see someone just saying ‘me too’, it makes me sad, because it’s no help to know here.
Likely every Opera=>VEWD convert Plex user has been affected.

@JamminR

While I can appreciate where you’re coming from with the “excitement” part of it (same thing here), is there zero value in the folks at Plex having an understanding of the quantity of us here that are impacted? While I completely recognize that Plex didn’t “do” this, I suspect that there’s at least a reasonable chance that Plex will have to be involved in the fix. And, if there’s a need to prioritize the effort, I would believe that it would useful for Plex to have a sense of how large the community is that’s being affected.

I’m not saying that everyone SHOULD post a “me too”, I’m honestly asking whether or not there is actual value in understanding the breadth of the impact should that be useful in prioritizing any work that may need to be done by Plex folks. Maybe we’ll get some additional input from Plex on what makes the most sense for them?
