Optimization and Upscaling

I have been playing with the optimization feature a little bit. Also, using it to try to upscale some older lower res videos. Was wondering if it could be configured for the transcoder to leverage the GPU on my video card? I would suspect that may allow for faster transcoding. I could be completely off-base but was curious.

Optimization does no upscale.
Upscaling should be done by your display/your client app. Doing it beforehand makes no sense. It only increases the required storage space with no increase of picture quality - at all.

Then how come when I optimize does it take a video that was 480p and re-format it to widescreen. Also, it asks what resolution you want so I have to believe there is some sort of upscaling occurring. My goal here is I have some old 480p video that I would love to get to a crisper 720p or 1080p

Please paste the XML info of this 480p video file.

That is a ‘limit’. Videos get only reduced if they’re bigger/bigger bitrate than the target setting. They never get upscaled.

This is impossible. Once detail information is lost due to a low resolution, it cannot be added back. All an “upscaling” process will do, is create more data volume but no increase in sharpness and detail. Never.
