For TV and Movies, there is an option to optimize the video for a specific device. This is especially great when watching UHD videos over the network and especially when watching them on a mobile device.
I have started collecting all my music in .fla format to retain much of it’s original depth. However, being a lossless format, it takes up more space than an .mp3.
Though audio has much less data download speed requirements, when downloading for offline use, it can add up. It would be great, if the mobile application can select a lower quality or lossless vs lossy and that the Plex server could have an option to “optimize” the audio files, just like it does for video files.
It already can do that.
Thank you for your response.
I checked and saw an option in the mobile application for a lower quality audio. However, when I download the audio file, it is still the same size as it was before I made the change.
I did a search and was unable to find any documentation in the forum or otherwise that would explain how to do so optimized. Would you be able to direct me to where this is documented?
In the Android app, you go into the settings of the app.
Section “Downloads”
There are different selectors for video downloads and audio downloads.
Items which are already downloaded don’t get retroactively reduced in their bitrate. You need to delete the downloads and download them anew.
Audio/Music library support will get removed from the regular mobile apps in the long term. Maybe you should take a look at Plexamp today. It definitely has the bitrate limiter for downloads on all platforms.
Thanks for the tip on using PlexAmp. That will work for my mobile needs.
