i recently downloaded some episodes of a show that where too big for what i needed. i optimized them and after that i deleted the originals after moving the optimized versions out of the folder that was created when optimizing.
i have done this tons of times before and everything has worked great. but i’m having issues with a show. i optimized 3 episodes and that’s all great, but the subtitles to not show up in the UI to be picked at all.
so all the things i did was:
set local assets to top in agent for tvdb
renamed the srt file to the exact name of the episode
i’ve done the plex dance of removing whole libraries and re-adding them.
rename the folder structure.
no dice.
i just optimized a whole season of a show 2 days prior and there is zero issues with the subtitles when viewing those episodes.
’
anything else i’m missing?
Depending on the optimization preset, you’ll have to select the subtitles on the pre-play page of the movies/episodes, prior to performing the optimization.
i re-optimized with subtitles selected on the pre-play page like you suggested and it made zero difference. like i said, i just did a whole season of another show and i didnt have to go 1 by 1 and pick subtitles, they all worked. so thats why im just confused as to why its not working now. the show is mythbusters, specifically the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
May I see the Plex XML info of one un-optimized episode?
Which optimization preset did you use? TV, Mobile, or custom?
custom 1.5 mbps is the preset i used
The subtitle doesn’t show up as ‘selected’ in the XML. I thought you said you did select it?
oh didnt know you wanted it selected for viewing xml… ok here you go
when i said i did select it was a couple posts up when i said i selected it in the page before optimization, did you mean did i select it before to view xml or something? i selected the subtitles when i optimized the 2nd time, then delete the source file after optimization so when i restored the source file the subtitle was reset to none i had to reselect it to get it in the view xml as selected
heres xml with subtitles selected without the 2nd optimized version
Now try to use the TV preset.
Is the subtitle missing as well in the optimized version?
Side question: do the subtitles show up when you play the original file in a regular desktop video player, like VLC?
the subtitle is not missing in the source file, it works fine. its just after i optimize the episode, plex is ignoring the optimize generated SRTs for these few episodes. i’ve done this exact same thing with previous shows and i’ve never had issues with plex not seeing subtitles before. when i get rid of the bigger video file and plex just sees the optimized file and srt, it will play the file fine, it is acting like there is no srt at all. i can view the same optimized file in VLC and use the optimized generated SRTs with VLC with no problems, it works. i will try the tv preset now with subtitles selected in the pre-play page. ill come back with what happens in a few mins
Did you disable the Local Media Assets agent?
disable? no. everything ive read about it says to enable it and put it at the top. is that not the case?
btw i appreciate the time you are spending with me. thank you for your help.

Enable yes, but put it into the lowest spot, is my recommendation.
After optimization is done,
can you wait a few minutes
then trigger an ‘Analyze’ on this episode? Does the subtitle show up then in the XML for the optimized version?
after i optimize the episode, the subtitle options grey out. if i delete the optimized episode the subtitles options come back.
heres pre optimized xml with subtitles selected and then optimized xml for the episode
Did you create the subfolder Plex Versions underneath \MythBusters\season 2018\ ?
Or was it created by Plex?
rename the subtitle file,
remove the part 272048. (including the dot)
then let it re-analyze the episode.
yeah i’ve done that, it doesn’t change anything. same thing.
