Optimizing Music Videos

I’ve got a few music videos in 4K that I would prefer to stream to things like an iPad off my network. Although I can change the quality, I run Plex off a Raspberry Pi, so it isn’t exactly practical. Anyone know if I’m just missing where you can optimize the videos?

Are these music videos attacked to your music library? If so, you can’t run the optimizer on these. You’ll have to do it manually. If it’s just a video library, the option should be there. I see it.

They are “attached” with inline method per the documentation on Plex’s website. How would I manually optimize them?

You can’t optimize them, that’s a Plex term. You can manually re-encode them using a program like FFMPEG. If that’s something you’re not familiar with here is a slightly more complicated method.

  • copy all the videos into a new folder
  • make a new movie library pointing to this new folder
  • optimize all the files
  • copy the optimized versions and overwrite the original version
  • delete this new movie library
  • delete this new folder and all the files in it

That blows. I have used FFmpeg before, as well as other solutions like handbrake (specifically the CLI version). I wish I could still have both versions to switch between though. What a shame.
