I can mirror my MacBook using AirPlay to an AppleTV. Works fine, but not great for Plex video, at times jerky movements – which is the case in general for mirroring video with AirPlay.
Native AirPlay support (casting) is much better, no stutters. Plex iOS has it, Plex OS X doesn’t – would be great if it did
If you have the plex app open on the apple TV - doesn’t work if you come out of the plex app on the apple tv - then it’ll allow casting (click on the casting icon). I tried it just now, it’s very slow. Doesn’t work if the app is closed; so not good if you want to cast music to the apple tv: you’d have to turn the tv on, open the app and have it on screen.
Maybe it cannot work any other way? Someone else will have to comment on that. An improvement would be if casting is allowed with the app in the background (still open but not on screen). I never tend to close apps (double clicking the home button). Also if it worked when the apple tv is woken up, without having to open the app on screen, but with the app still open in the background.

Nah… those bells & whistles sound great, but my feature-request is just to have casting. Doesn’t matter when I’m home, as I have the the Plex app on my ATV4 – it’s when I’m somewhere else. Thanks though.
I think it would be useful to stream music content to some receiver, e.g. Yamaha, too.
