Plex on iOS casting doesn't work

Server Version#: 4.145.1
Player Version#: 2025.19.0

I just updated Plex on my iPhone. Casting hasn’t worked properly since the UI was redesigned and it’s still failing, even though one issue with casting is listed in the bug fixes.

I have several Apple TVs on my LAN and some Macs. In the past I could touch the Cast icon and get a list of devices to cast to. I touch it now and get “No Devices Found,” and a message about making sure everything is on the same wifi network. (It is all there, more details to prove that as I go on.) So if I want to cast to an Apple TV, I have to use Screen Mirroring. So I use that and I can play back on the Apple TV device. (Which proves the devices are all on the same LAN.)

BUT - when I stop Screen Mirroring, so it’ll play back on just my iPhone, and continue playing whatever I was watching, there is no video. The audio will continue, but when I’ve turned off Screen Mirroring, the video is gone until I force quit Plex and restart it. I’ve also noticed that if I turn on Screen Mirroring, then try to start playback of a playlist, I cannot bring up the option to shuffle play. It simply does not come up when Screen Mirroring is in use, so I have to remember the order in which I do things matters - I have to start playback, THEN turn on Screen Mirroring if I want to shuffle play.

It’s a puzzle to me why this can go so bad from one version, where it worked fine, until the next. I get that the UI and other things were changed, but there’s no reason the old code for the casting function, that worked fine, would have to be replaced and why, after months with the changes in place, this function that worked before still cannot work. Perhaps the previous code to handle casting was a mess - but it worked. The new version can’t cast, relies on Screen Mirroring to play back on other devices, and, after mirroring is stopped, Plex must be restarted to be able to play back video again.

For now, this means I’m using VLC instead. I have my Plex playlists and can’t do playlists on VLC easily, but I can create directories and link the files I want to the new directories, which amounts to the same thing, It’s a pain, but every time I want to play back a playlist, and it’s not available on VLC, I do this. It’s gotten so I use Plex less and less because this function isn’t just buggy - it’s unuseable.

So, what? Just forget it and count on Plex to not be able to do this? Or is this something that should be filed as a bug report?
