Out of home viewing

Hi, newbie here…

Read over some of the guides, etc but can’t seem to configure
my Netgear Orbi to allow remote viewing.

Plex working great at home.

What am I missing? Thx.

Is your Orbi also connected to a router provided by your ISP?

No, my Netgear Orbi is fed by my modem, have no other routers.

Also, just logged in to it and the Upnp is turned on.

My Comcast broadband (90 down / 15 up) is stable.

Where do I find the ip for my Plex? Where do I add it to Orbi?

do you have this Xfinity security thing Xfinity XFi Security and impact on availability of Remote Access - #7 by PennGrad

Not sure, where would I look for it?

By the way, I have the same Not able to view
issue with my new HDHomeRun Connect.

Ok a few questions.

  1. Are you on unlimited data with Comcast? Or do you have a data cap?
  2. Are you positive that the “Modem” comcast gave you doesn’t also have a router/wifi built into it?
  3. If you have the XFi security, then you need to disable the security through the Comcast XFi app.
  4. If you do not, go here: http://canyouseeme.org and put the port number of your plex server in and see if it says it can see you or not.

No to questions. 1, 2, and 3

Where do I find the Plex port number?

Thx again

Settings>Remote Access

The one in the Red is the one you need to type in to canyouseeme. The Blue ones are important when we need to manually specify, which it’s looking more and more like we’re going to have to.

Now, you said "No to questions. 1, 2, and 3.

  1. was an either or question, not Yes/No
  2. No = You’re NOT positive that it’s just a modem?
  3. Wasn’t really a question, just a statement.

this will probably come in handy at some point:

carry on.

Sorry, guess I didn’t read your reply carefully.

  1. on unlimited Comcast

  2. I think so but will confirm

  3. Looking into that security.

  4. tried canyouseeme.org and it says it can not see my computer

I have a computer guy coming over tomorrow and he will dig deeper.

This is a challenge for dummies like me, haha!

It’s a challenge for most people to be honest.

What I suspect is, your comcast modem is also a router. Which is putting you in a double NAT situation. You can partially alleviate this by putting your Orbi into Access Point mode. Once that’s done, you’ll be in a single NAT situation. From there it’s a simple matter of logging into your ISP’s provided modem/router (I think Comcast does this with the XFi security App) and then doing these two things:

  1. Setup a Manual Port in the Remote Access Section of Plex
  2. Forward that manual port to Port 32400 on your computer

This should get you 99.9% of the way there. The only variable at that point is the Comcast XFi Security. This is an optional Add-On for most comcast customers, however, from what I understand they require it for anyone with Unlimited Data and a Gigabit connection. Not sure about people on less than 1 Gigabit.

But this is just a simple matter of getting the app onto your phone, logging in, and then turning off the “Advanced Security”.

Hope that helps, and if anything, have your computer guy read it and it may give him a better understanding.

A little more detail… my modem is a Motorola SB6120 Surfboard

Specs say it does not have a router.

Without sitting on hold forever with Comcast how can I check
if XFi Security is in play ? You mentioned an app, is there a link?

Sweet, so, you’re already on Single NAT. In that case, continue to follow the steps above, except replace “ISP Cable Modem” with “Orbi”

It’s possible the UPNP option is failing you. So, in those instances, you need to set the manual port in Plex still. Then go into the Orbi and port forward to your computer. I would also recommend setting up an IP Reservation so that your plex server always gets the same IP Address even in the event of a large power outage.

I am not sure, but, if you don’t have their router, it seems unlikely this is the problem, if the port forwarding method fails, you’ll need to contact comcast to see about the app/where to go to manage their advanced security.

Edit: Here is a link for how to port forward on an Orbi
