Hi Experts!

I’m from the UK and having trouble recording episodes that are back to back on the same channel.

— The issue —

The first recording starts at the correct time - say 5pm, but sometimes overruns to say 6:03…the next recording starts on the same channel at 6:04 (after adverts) and runs to say 7:00-7:05.

As I understand it, Plex will record any episodes that are aired back to back as one recording, then ‘split’ the recording into individual episodes in post processing.

This seems to be playing havoc when I need to set a +5 minute overrun on recordings due to the overrun mentioned above. The first episode will record fine, but the second episode is either missing the beginning, end, or both.

—what I’ve tested—

I’ve tried searching the forums - to no avail, I saw a post from someone in Australia who suggested using Channels, but I love Plex and am a lifetime PlexPass member (no t-shirt as yet though…).

I’ve tried setting different recording ‘offsets’ (the pre-recording , post recording timers) to no avail.

What does seem to work is using the HD HomeRun DVR - this is another paid service so would ideally like to use Plex and eliminate the need.

I assume the HD HomeRun is identifying the back to back episodes and ensuring they are assigned to different tuners (I have four on the Connect Quatro) - therefore eliminating the need to do any splits in post processing.

— the ask —

Does anyone know of a ‘fix’ for this? Possible solutions I can think of are;

  • have Plex identify back-to-back episodes to different tuners
  • record back-to-back episodes as one recording and allow users to manually split in Post processing
  • allow different recording ‘overrun’ times for back-to-back recordings from recordings that are not back-to-back.

Happy to be told I’m just ‘using it wrong’ - ideally I would move away from HD HomeRun’s DVR as I’m having to record every episode rather than just episodes missing from my Plex library.

Thanks for reading!
Matt

Allow X minutes after usually works fine. You can view the recording schedule to see the effects of the schedule offsets. In order to conserve tuners it only uses one.

Some suggestions would be if using commercial detection to only do that during scheduled tasks. Don’t use a RAM drive.

That NAS has a J4125 which could get a bit overwhelmed with multiple streams coupled with post processing. Plex only uses the CPU for these tasks.

Hi,
thanks for the reply

I ended up finding a YouTube video about running Plex in a Docker container - I’ve followed it and recordings seem to be fine now.

I assume the issue was from when I updated Synology DSM 6 to 7, and user permissions changed from ‘Plex’ to ‘PlexMediaServer’ around the same time.

Cheers,
Matt
