Pausing and Stuttering on Plex Client on Nvidia Shield

When I first setup plex on my HP Desktop (i7 930 CPU with 24 GB DDR2 Memory, 240 GB SSD Boot drive) I was recording Live TV to a Share on my Windows 2012 R2 Storage Server, and surprisingly enough, things appeared to be working well. TV was recording, and it was watchable to the point of happiness by the wife… Happy Wife… Happy Life…

Well, the wife is not so happy… she’s starting to push me back to WMC as it’s a set it and forget it and it works…

For reasons unknown… watching any Live TV or Recorded TV (from the Plex DVR has become almost unwatchable. For this reason, I moved my recording folders to a local drive on the PC that is running Plex… That did not resolve the issue, and I sometimes feel it is worse than I was recording Tv across my 1 GB network to the NAS…

I noticed that when playing TV recordings from the Nvidia Shield, it shows to be Transcoding both Audio and Video… Is this normal? Is this what is causing my issues with random pausing in Plex on my Nvidia Shield ?

Reading the forms, I saw a discussing alluding to subtitles causing this type of issue. (I have them set to “Always” as I use subtitles… I just set that to 'Auto" as a test to see if this will make content watchable again.

Set Video → Burn Subtitles = Auto. Setting it to Always forces Plex to transcode the video. The Shield can direct play MPEG2 video.

Video Quality → Adjust Automatically = Off. On can result in transcoded video.

Set Video → Display Information = On. During playback, pull up the on screen display (tap bottom of ring on remote, pause video, etc). Look in upper left corner of screen. It will tell you if media is direct playing / direct streaming / transcoding. If one of latter two, it will provide a reason.

Now try playing a show with subtitles disabled. Does the video & audio direct play? If not, what does the Information Overlay show?

If the show direct plays w/o subtitles, try again with subtitles enabled. What happens?

Also, I’m wondering why the audio is transcoding from AC3 to AAC.

To what is the Shield attached - TV, soundbar, receiver? Make/Model?

What are your audio settings in both the Plex client and for the Shield itself?
