Support is not part of the paid features of Plex Pass, and I’ve provided information on how PMP is intended to be used. If it’s used outside of what’s intended, unfortunately we can’t guarantee what it will do.
Which plex player does support HDR on Windows?
Or even an option to passthrough HDR to display…
The only players that i know of that support HDR playback are VLC and powerDVD. Other players like potplayer for example are able to play the UHD file but unable to process its 2020rec color space thus everything looking washed out grayish. These players only get full support when you add madVR and LAV filters to them.
I personally am having some troubles getting players like these to play on my PC but when using VLC (must be latest and currently it is 3.0.7) it’s getting correct coloring at least correct to the native app on sony XF90. When i compare the screenshots of same identical frame (of course the frame where HDR is mostly utilized) VLC and native app have no difference in coloring. They are identical and look gorgeous.
Though lots from HDR community will swear in the name of madVR but i don’t see it’s any better compared to the latest VLC in playback and color reproduction. madVR has some special options for better upscaling etc but i already have amazing upscaler chip in the TV so i don’t need those features.
Yes, Im using MPC-HC with MadVR and its excellent.
I would simply use the native app on my TV except it doesnt have Atmos audio passthrough.
Its a real pity that Plex cant do this (I know you can by editing the mpv.conf file but it shouldnt have to be so difficult
I’m not personally aware of any Plex client on Windows that supports HDR (Plex Media Player tone maps to SDR). I know both Android TV on an Nvidia Shield and Apple TV support HDR, but I’m not aware of any HTPC type client that does for Plex.
Why don’t you just use kodi dsplayer and install the plex add-on, if you set it up to automatically load plex it is pretty much like using just plex. The only issue is it will not keep track of watched and unwatched items or continue items. But if you want HDR with Plex on windows 10 it is quite easy.
Real pity.
Cant there be an option for HDR passthrough? Let the display handle it…
Using external players in Kodi breaks the mobile device remote control functionality.
We use our phones to control kodi 100% so thats a deal breaker sadly
Unless theres another way that Im unaware of?
Chromecast works perfectly from my android phone to Vizio tv with HDR but I’m sure it would work with a Chromecast dongle as well. But I’m sure you don’t want to spend any money so it looks like your options are pretty limited. I use the work arounds to get what I want. I’m willing to compromise a little here and there and I definitely understand others aren’t.
Not about spending money it just seems crazy that on devices like Apple TV and Nvidia Shield HDR is supported but not the desktop player?
My HTPC is waaaay more powerful than either of those devices but it cant be done natively - It seems backward to me.
I’ve been and still am a huge Plex fan for many years but its so disappointing
In terms of chromecast, I doubt I could cast a 4K HDR10 movie to it with seamless playback
■■■■ I don’t work for them it’s not my fault, I agree it’s stupid I’m just simply letting you know there are workarounds. You don’t like it find another program to use I guess.
Woosa dude
Im not blaming you or knocking what you have told me - Im fully aware you are an end-user just like me
If these forums arent the correct place for me to vent about my feelings, then there really isnt another place to go
As you can see, Im not one of those “Devs dont care and better fix it or else I’ll move to Emby” kind of members. The devs owe me nothing - yes I paid for a lifetime pass and its money I would happily give again.
Yes I have found an alternative to use for the results I want, just saying - it could be done and would be much better as well as a big value add if I didnt have to do it outside of plex
Hi, I am in a similar position here. I have a house full of powerful and capable HTPC’s, and I am unable to get 4K HDR playback to look good and be stable. The closest I came was MadVR with MPC-HC but that would not run smooth, and was a lot of faff to set up and use.
I am actually considering buying either an Nvidia Shield or a Vero 4K plus device, just to playback 4K HDR content. My understanding is that even then though I cannot use a plex player and have instead to use Kodi.
Is this correct, anything else that I have missed?
You can use the Plex client on the Shield. That has refresh rate switching, HD audio passthrough, and 4K HDR support.
I get HDR with PMP and my Windows PCs, ones with Intel Iris Graphics and of course ones with NVIDIA GPUs. As I have said before, I believe the keys are:
- Make sure GPU control panel is driving display at 10 or 12 bit color; I use 12 bit 4:2:2 2160p23.976 (if you can not confirm this you will not get HDR playback into the display)
- Make sure HDR is turned on via Windows display control panel
- Make sure you are in TV mode in PMP
- Make sure you have TV mode playback settings for audio and video configured correctly
- Confirm “direct play” of all streams once playing back (ie go to app.plex.tv dashboard on another station); if anything (maybe even audio) is transcoding you won’t get HDR. Ideally you also want a way to have your display confirm to you that it’s “seeing” HDR. Most displays give you a way to do this. E,g, on my LG OLED the screen goes blank for a sec then “HDR” flashes in the top right corner of the screen for a few secs once I fire up a 4K movie in Windows PMP.
There are two things IMHO meant by “supports HDR”:
- You can play HDR correctly on an HDR display.
- You can play HDR correctly on an SDR display.
#1 based on my experience: Windows, Shield, Roku 4K (must use AC3 or DTS tracks only), LG Plex App
#2: Windows
Even on a HDR display in Windows, PMP is tone mapping to SDR, so I don’t think it’s really showing HDR.
My Bravia Plex app plays HDR fine. I wish people would stop saying “Shield” like it’s the only Android device that exists. Sorry I know this thread is windows related but misinformation doesn’t help anyone.
People are probably focusing on replacing a device, not their entire TV.
it would be nice if plex (or someone) could create a chart of which specific devices (including smart tvs) which support direct play HDR, and what audio formats are supported direct play/passthrough.
Also, a list of devices with known issues and whether they are determined to be a device or plex limitation.
