PC Plex Media Player HDR

So what about Windows? There are lots of HDR monitors on the market (I have one myself) and I cannot even watch my own media in HDR. Whether it be Plex Media Player or the new “Plex” app, there needs to be HDR support on Windows. There is no reason that Plex Media Player or this new “Plex” app shouldn’t have HDR support.

well… i’m gonna have to disagree, my TV “sees” HDR when the PMP fires up. When it is not playing HDR, the TV does not “see” HDR.

You are saying the list must be amended to:

  • You can play HDR correctly on an HDR display.
  • You can play HDR correctly on an SDR display.
  • You can play HDR correctly on an HDR display by forcing the HDR to needlessly tonemap to SDR

Again, I promise. I play HDR in HDR in PMP on a 4K HDR TV.

Not sure how that is occurring for you but I can assure you that mpv (the backend player engine for PMP) is not capable of passing though the HDR metadata correctly. Your system (assuming its Windows here) is doing something that triggered the HDR signal from the OS but mpv can not capitalize on that yet. There was some work late 2018 by one of the mpv devs Jeeb to get that working in Windows. However that work is not complete and there has not been any work for HDR on the backengine of PMP for well over 2 years.

Ok I have been looking everywhere for that. and no offense but I have seen many times a moderator say something in this forum then a plex dev come and comment the complete opposite.

so I have to do the TEST myself

I have Nvidia shield TV + a pc with GTX 1080 Ti + 2nd pc with GT 730 + LG B7 HDR OLED that gives notification.

how you can tell in windows that you are not running HDR on the TV? the colors look washed out? yes that happens on normal monitors but on HDR monitor it won’t look washed out . so are you saying that on windows 10 using pmp something is doing tone maping ? then how to check if it is tone mapping or running perfect HDR ? ( does it show in tautuli as its not direct play ? )

I got all devices I want to test so please reply so i can confirm it even record it for the other members who doubt it , i can use my capture card or phone to record it and post it

I arrived to the similar question:

I look forward to read what you find out and see.
