Windows HDR support?

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#:1.1.0.831-e1ae73b1

Hi,

Does the new Plex desktop app for windows include HDR support? (not tone map to SDR…)

No it does not and there is no telling when that will be supported.

so what exactly does plex / mpv do when it sees hdr, tries to map it to sdr?

Yes, and it actually does it very well if I recall from when I last used PMP. But it’s just not the same as my LG app, Shield or ATV 4K.

not sure i know what you mean when you say it’s not the same as your lg app, shield or atv 4k?

has anyone tried doofus’s mpv tweaks for hdr? he’s doing it for his emby install but, given both emby and plex use the mpv player, is there any reason to think it wouldn’t work with plex as well?

his clear, concise instructions:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/76664-hdr-and-emby-theater-desktop-explained/

and his trial and error posts, the process he went through to arrive at what he believes works very well:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/69872-hdr-tone-mapping-with-mpv/

I just meant the tone-mapping is fine but you can’t beat the real thing.

Doofus is very dedicated to HTPC.
Back when I used Emby it worked very well in Emby Theatre.
As for trying to get it to work in Plex it’s something I never looked at.

gotchya, and i agree 100%…

quick question - what player does plex use for roku, shield, and atv 4k not the mpv player i’m assuming?

if plex doesn’t use the mpv player with the above three devices, does plex use a different player for each of the different devices, or do they all use the same player?

and finally, is plex able to handle hdr perfectly well when using one of the three mentioned devices? does plex + the player pass through hdr metadata to the display?

Roku no idea.
Shield definitely not and according to a dev never will.
Apple TV 4K… Absolutely.

As for HDR …
Roku no idea.
Shield… Yes
Apple TV 4K… Yes but audio passthru is it’s downside.

he seems like a great, patient guy, and seems to answer all questions thrown his way… i’m going to try to use his mpv settings with plex, but was wondering if anyone else has already given it a shot?

the first part of your reply:

Roku no idea.
Shield definitely not and according to a dev never will.
Apple TV 4K… Absolutely.

are you referring to my mpv question, if these devices use mpv?

the second part of your reply:

As for HDR …
Roku no idea.
Shield… Yes
Apple TV 4K… Yes but audio passthru is it’s downside.

are you saying that plex + shield and atv 4k passes through hdr metadata to the display without any sort of tone mapping?

thanks!

Yes the ATV 4K uses MPV. The shield doesn’t and I have no recent experience with a Roku.
The shield and ATV 4K both do HDR passthru but again to idea with the Roku.
I own a Shield and an ATV 4K if you also need HD-Audio passthru then you have no option but the Shield.
Personally I don’t get much from Atmos so I 99% of the time use the ATV 4K. MPV on the ATV 4K is truly stunning, especially with HDR.

yes, i want / need audio pass through, which i can get with my shield or htpc… i’ve probably removed and put back the shield in my set up a half a dozen times, i don’t like anything about it, but whenever i run into a brick wall with my htpc or other devices i go back to the shield thinking “well at least this works”.

thing is, the shield has it’s own set of problems, and i always chuckle when i come across a post that reads “get a shield, you can throw anything at it, and it just works…”, that certainly hasn’t been my experience, it seems like there’s always something screwy going on with it, for example after the last update the remote no longer works properly, the on/off button just stopped, ha ha…

anyway, would love to use plex + my htpc, but not at the expense of quality hdr.

Oddly my experience with the Shield has improved since the last update
However, I hate the remote and truly despise the UX, so when I do use it I only use its awesome Chromecast abilities and use my phone to cast to and control it.

Personally, I’m more of a videophile than an audiophile so I prefer the ATV 4K. As mentioned I get little from Atmos and Plex on the ATV 4K converts to lossless flac 7.1
I really can’t tell the difference. I can certainly see a difference in the picture. If that’s purely down to MPV I have no idea.

i have a bunch of atmos titles so i really want / need atmos but, like you, video quality is the priority for me, and i need something that will handle my ripped hdr library correctly… atv 4k? just not a fan of the apple eco system or products so i’ll never go there, but i sure as hell wish others would either hire away apple’s ui designers or copy their beautiful interfaces as closely as possible without getting sued!

Yeah you have no idea of the shock it caused when I told friends/family I was buying anApple product.

Anyway Keep us updated on your Plex/PMP/HDR tests

Plex on the Shield uses a forked version of ExoPlayer.

Thanks.

Howcome?

Is it not possible to allow external renderers or players such as MPC-HC & MadVR?

If you happen to have a different Bluetooth-based remote laying around, try to pair it with the Shield.
The FireTV remote is a decent replacement, it has been reported. With working Play button!

The Shield now has pretty much the same user interface as all Plex big screen apps.
So it looks very similar to this:
