I understand that both Xbox and Roku do not support PGS subtitles and that is forcing the PMS to have to Burn-in the subtitles. However the burn-in appears to cause issues only when using HW transcoding.
My PMS has an i3 14100 CPU and 32GB of RAM running Ubuntu server.
With no PGS subtitles and HW transcoding enabled this thing can transcode 4K HEVC videos like a champ.
As soon as I enable PGS subtitles the transcode still “works” but the playback begins stuttering. The CPU usage in this case goes from 0% without PGS subtitles to around 30-40% usage with PGS subtitles.
Whats weird is that if I turn off HW transcoding altogether and go full software the CPU can handle a 4K HEVC video with PGS subtitles without playback issues. Now granted the CPU is now under between 70-90% utilization, but no playback issues occur.
So, my question is, how can the CPU handle a full software transcode with PGS subtitles without playback issues, but then fail when using HW transcoding with PGS subtitles?
