Hi there. I am also having issue with PGS subtitles and HardWareTranscoding on my Synology DS1520+ (which is HWT compatible). I have to disable subtitles or hwt to be able to playout.
Is there any fix for that ?
PGS, VOBSUB, and DVDRIP subtitles, being image based, cannot be burned in HW.
The CPU must do it. The VAAPI (HW API) didnāt give us a way to do it.
Synology NAS units, with exception of the Xeon models, have always suffered in this.
All subtitle burning is this way however, Text based (SRT) can be overlayed by almost every player / tv. Text based subtitles are , by far, the preferred format.

thank you. Ok that CPU is doing it but this is unfortunate that plex is not disabling the HWT then or better doing HWT for video and CPU for PGS (have no idea if possible hehe). When I see something not working I have to ask the server to disable that option, would be nice if it could be automatic because I have not always access to the server settings
Please do the following.
- Verify DEBUG logging enabled
- Verify VERBOSE logging disabled.
- Start the playback session which recreates this
- Let it try for 20 seconds
- Stop playback
- Let sit idle for 20 seconds
- Download the Logs (Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs)
- Attach that ZIP file here. I will look at it.

sorry i thought i disabled it heheā¦ not easy to see if disable or enable i have to say. Here is a new tryā¦ first without hardware transcoding, working fine, then hwt on with one samsung tv from 2019 where it is not even working at all, and with another tv from 2020 where it is buffering then it stops. FYI, With the Plex app on Samsung, if the audio is transcoding, enabling SRT subtitles forces a video transcode.
Avoid TrueHD and dts audio formats when using subtitles, as they will transcode. Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus should direct play.
Thank you guys. Any advice on what i could use to play smoothly a 4k video + pgs subtitles on my tv? I guess a mac mini (have an old one from 2011 intel Core i5 2.5GHz, 8Gb 1333MHz DDR3) would probably do it easily or may be an apple tv 4k would be potent enough ??
And last question may be, would it make better sense to have to library on Synology and server on Mac mini or server on Synology and client on mac with direct play? I guess server on Mac mini would be the only solution to serve more that one tv.

Might be cheaper than buying a new imac mini, yes, and it comes with a plex server i think.
By the way the tv is 4k with HDMI-ARC, my Yamaha RXV681 is truehd/atmos compatible i guess, so the āwhole chainā should be compatible with 4k direct play, so i can just leave the plex server on the NAS

Due to bandwidth constraints, HDMI-ARC cannot pass lossless audio formats such as TrueHD, dts-HD, or PCM 5.1. It will pass up to 5.1 channels of Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus (including Atmos), and dts. It also passes PCM 2.0.
HDMI-eARC will pass those lossless formats, but only for equipment attached to the TVās HDMI inputs. TV manufacturers do not allow TV based apps to pass lossless audio via HDMI-eARC.
The only off the shelf device that supports TrueHD + Atmos & dts-HD audio passthrough and HDR playback is the Nvidia Shield.
Your connection options are:
Nvidia Shield ā HMDI ā Receiver/Soundbar ā HDMI ā TV
or
Nvidia Shield <āHDMI ā TV ā HDMI-eARC ā Receiver/Soundbar
In the second scenario, both the TV and sound equipment must support HDMI-eARC. If one does not, the connection falls back to HDMI-ARC.
