Just recently got into the Hue setup and really liking it so far, dimming would be a great start, I take your point about the ambilight but wondering how the guys over at xmbc cracked thi as I think they have had it working for some time?
If that does eventually get developed I think I will be investing in some light strips too
looking forward to this going forward, creating a 12 lamp media room, and want at first the room to dim all the lights when i start playing and go back to the settings prior to starting the movie at the end?
Just to let you know: installed it with no ruby knowledge and is running fine. However: there is a small error in plexHue.rb and I left an issue on your github page.
If I may suggest a feature: remember the state (brightness) of the lights so when turned on again they are at the same brightness level as when turned off.

That is a good idea for a feature. Please open a github ticket for it, and I'll implement it.
And thanks for trying it out! I am glad that it worked for you with (almost) no issues. I appreciate it!
I'm going to start developing a plugin to do Hue light dimming when a video is played. I don't think I will implement ambilight like features due to the delay in controlling the lights with the Hue API. If anyone has any feature suggestions I will consider them. :)
Awesome news. I guess my desire would be to have the same functionality as the Hue plugin for XBMC. I have a light strip behind the TV and really like it can control that and other lights separately.
Well that is awesome. Just installed Hues in my living room and will test you app over the weekend.
Not to seem to greedy for features but I think it might be good to have the option to have the lights just dimmed and not completely switched off. But I am getting ahead of myself.

For now: Thank you very much for making this :-)
If you hop into /bin/hue.rb, the values for the states are at the bottom. Should make for some easy modifications untill the author has time to expand the config :)
This is simply using a free piece of java software named HueImmersive (in development) that sends your screen colours back to the Hue lights. I quickly tried this with Plex last night with a movie and it was great, really added to the experience.
Trying to get this to work on my mac mini (10.0) running server and playing off ps4...get to the cp section and it kicks back an error that the /etc/init.d/plexHue doesn't exist...kinda a noob at this stuff, any help would be gratefully accepted thanks
I'm definitely keeping an eye on this! But at the moment i'm not going to use this because it isn't possible to change the colors yet.
I actually figured out an other way for adjusting the lights with maximum one minute delay.
I've set up plexwatch to send pushover messages to my tablet which contains tasker. Tasker then intercepts the messages and filters out the ones coming from my tv.
In tasker you can then set up a task which is triggerd for every action (play, pause, resume, watched) and change the lights within the task. Using autoHue tasker plugin.
