Cast pictures are only showing if you use The Movie Database as ā€˜cast list source’:

If you use TheMovieDatabase as your primary library agent, do activate ā€˜Plex Movie’ as additional agent in the agent settings:

If your movies are in mp4 / m4v format, they can contain embedded cast info without pictures. You want to make sure that embedded meta data doesn’t override the info from the online agents
by doing this:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ā€˜Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

@OttoKerner , thanks for your replay, however i find a more easy way, i only had to edit my movie library since there the agent selected was Plex Movie and if i scroll down i was able to change cast source

Yes, the agent settings are mirrored there.

I am still having this issue and have checked all of my settings to match those above. The weird thing is that everything was working fine AFAIK up until about a week or so ago. I am wondering if there is some new issue with the movie db and plex?

I have the same problem.
Actors pictures are disappearing when a movie is updating its metadata.
I haven’t changed any settings in a while, and its only something I noticed now - so I assume its just started here lately.

Would be really nice with some attention to this issue - Don’t know why, but it bothers me very much!

For some reason its only the danish collections. They have always been able to get the pictures from the movie database, but now the pictures disappear after updating metadata. After the actors picture is gone, the letters don’t even appear - it just shows a black circle.
I am seriously at the end of my rope regarding this issue…and some help would be much appreciated

Is this now a general issue? Same here up until a few weeks ago cast photos are not being loaded (just initials).
Any help out there?

Hello everyone, someone who achieved the photos of the actors, since he installed the PMS a week ago, never appeared the photos of the actors. Please help to solve this problem.

  1. disable the OMDB agent
  2. Move the line ā€˜Local Media Assets’ downwards, below of the line ā€˜Plex Movie’
  3. have you set the ā€˜Cast List Source’ to ā€˜TheMovieDatabase’ as shown above?

Not exact science, is it? Or is this what we have to do on the later versions of PMS?

  1. OMDB is 3rd-party, and unsupported. I have read quite a few reports that it doesn’t work properly anymore.

  2. mp4 files can have an embedded list of actors - but without links to pictures. So if ā€˜Local Media Assets’ is at the top, it will override the list of actors with pictures coming from the Plex Movie agent.

  3. was always necessary, since only TMDB will deliver a link to a photo

Ahh… I see.Thanks…

@OttoKerner,
Is there a FAQ or guide on what PLEX will gather from the metadata of MP4 files?

There is none, AFAIK.

I’ve tested and I was able to read

  • title
  • sort title
  • mpaa content rating
  • studio
  • summary
  • genre
  • director
  • writers
  • actors (no pictures or role names)
  • collection (in the ā€˜Album’ tag)
  • release year (only when it is inserted in the ā€˜Encoded date’ tag, not from the ā€˜Recorded date’ or ā€˜Tagged date’)
  • poster

Interesting. It be nice to have this info in an article for future use. I’m sure many people can get insight from it. Particularly, the ā€˜release year’. Not that I know much or the reason why PLEX reads embedded data. I guess reading the actors was way before linking to online photos of said actor. So will there/is there plans on allowing urls to said actors in the future?

I will try to get this into the knowledge base.

Why should it not read them, when they’re available and the method to read them is available as open source?

I don’t know about about that. What type of URL do you mean anyway? A link to an ā€˜actor info’ page or just a link to a portrait photo?

That my friend would be a great addition to the knowledge base.

You know… It’s just complicated with PLEX. The agents don’t play well with others. They might need a timeout or something. lol.

Probably the latter.
