Sorry I’m not sure how I missed your follow up to my question, the new player will not let you toggle continue playback while playing an item. However you should still be able to press the play button on a season or show and it should start a playlist that will automatically proceed to the next item.

I agree with you, watching a TV show and not being able to have the next episode automatically play once the current episode is finished is a little irritating. I’ve made a feature request as I agree and I’ve noticed that some other devices don’t support continual playbac as well.
Heres a link to the request, if you have any idea, leave it in a comment.
With the new video player on PS4, will it be possible to use soft subtitles without Plex Media Server having to transcode and burn them in? I understand it might not be in this version, but is it a possibility down the road?
We are aiming to release the platform update early next week. The release you linked to was an app update like the ones we have been releasing regularly.

Unfortunately It won’t be in the upcoming releases, however it’s absolutely something we are looking into adding.

That’s great news! I suspected that, I just wanted to find out Thanks!
Thanks for linking me to this thread.
Since a few others are asking of features, will the new version allow me to access my local server without being connected to the net? Currently if we have a big storm and the net goes down I can’t use plex even though my server and clients are all on the same local network!

unfortunately you would still need to be connected to the internet for the app to launch.
I moved on from the ps4 app to a shieldtv, but tested this update to compare. It’s night and day with the previous version, this is 100% better and faster. My shared users will be happy. Thanks!
I really hope this fixes the crashes! I get one after every episode, so annoying. Everything else is great, keep up the good work, wheres the beer button, @kay.one ?

Why is this? I understand for adding new users or devices, that makes sense. But once that has happened, why should the local server require the Internet to authenticate and already authenticated device / user / IP address? Plex on my NAS keeps track of what devices are attached to it, so I don’t see why it should be a requirement for existing already authenticated things.
Perhaps we could simply divide it into local and remote devices / users, therefore only ‘private / lan’ addresses might be ok to run without Internet access, and remote users being less secure would require Internet authentication.
We already have different stream quality settings for this, Also settings for ‘private server ip and port’ (what’s the point of this if I can’t use it while not connected to the net?) don’t see why authentication couldn’t also be treated seperately.
For me, the best part about plex is that when I have nothing else to do, there is always something I can watch. I use the net a lot, when it goes down, I don’t have much to do. But I can’t use plex either as it is!
Interested to know if others think LAN shouldn’t require Internet access once authenticated.
I have added a poll for this for the general discussions for plex pass holders here:
Has been beaten to death in the context of Internet shortages; Plex, Inc. didn’t seen like they’d change their plans. I guess you could always use dlna in that situation…
So I believe the update is live, as my episode selection menu looks very different now. However I still have the same crashing problem. Basically if the current playlist (season of a tv show) has too many episodes, or if I browse through plex for too long without playing something, or if I play too many things in plex without closing or restarting the app, it crashes. :-\
UPDATE: Even though some cosmetic aspects while browsing appear different, information on the ps4 app still says version 1.0 so maybe an option just got changed on my end

The PS3 and PS4 apps are made up of 2 parts:
the PS Platform App. This is updated through the PS Network and you will see the update happen. (has not made it through the Sony process yet.
The Plex web client. This updates automatically each time you launch the Plex app. This has been updated as per the release notes on this forum.

That just defeats the purpose of Plex as far as I’m concerned. I use Plex because it’s a much better interface for my media than any DLNA. I can do tversity, twonky etc, hell my NAS has twonky built in if I want, but it’s clunky, doesn’t track what has and hasn’t been viewed and looks like … ■■■■.
Again the question is why is my NAS/ server even storing login / connection info on a per device / ip level if it still has to check with the website? We have to enter w pin only for new devices, our local server/NAS doesn’t make you enter it again because it knows it’s already been authenticated, so why does it need the net again?
For new devices, completely makes sense. Just doesn’t for devices that are already authenticated.

if you see @DavidIrwin response, he explains that the app is composed of two parts, one the platform which is distributed by Sony using the PSN network and 2nd part which is distributed from plex servers, once you start the app it needs to hit our servers to get the web component which requires an internet connection, this framework/architecture is something we have no real control over and is dictated by Sony.
This requirement is really not something we have some crazy obsession over , Some platforms allow us to ship all of the code with the package, (Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, Plex Media Player etc) and those apps work perfectly fine without internet connection, unfortunately for Playstation and most smart TVs we have no choice other than to rely on our servers which means an internet connection is required.
Sorry if that is not the answer you were looking for, but unfortunately that’s our current reality.
I think it’s a bit better, as in not as frequently but it still happens. This would be in line with Sony allowing Plex to use 300mb of ram instead of the 240mb it had before (think that is what I read earlier?). Means it will take longer to run out of memory, but if it’s still leaking it’s going to eventually. Guess more work on optimizing to come.
