Platform Update for PS4

Update just went out for EU users, please see the original post for the update!

Many improvements and fewer crashes. But unfortunately, it still crashes every time when browsing large TV-series like classic Doctor Who.

Thanks, I’ve created an issue on our side to optimize the episode list.

Specifically it’s the list of seasons that crashes every time.

Viewing the episode list inside a season seems to work well, however it crashes every time when going to an actual episode from this list.

When going directly to an episode from the Deck on the front page it loads the actual episode page. But it’s unresponsive for a few seconds until the next/previous arrows on top is shown. Then I can select the buttons and view the episode. This used to crash every time as well.

All of this however worked very well without any crashes up until february/march this year.

@johnwr you hit the nail on the head regarding the season page and episode page being culprits.

The data to power those < and > buttons at the top could be too much to fetch in a burst. We’re on it.

Update should be available for all users globally.

Time to go smash that “check for update button”

First of all, thanks for the update, just received it down in Australia! Gotta say, it’s working a treat thus far, things that used to buffer horribly are now working seamlessly. I have my maximum H.264 set to none. My d/load is at 100mbps so direct streaming is never an issue, the less CPU load the better!

Just a small question however. I have a Samsung TV so I often use Orca’s app. It’s pretty darn great, however my TV is old so it has it’s limitations. The one feature I find extremely useful is the ‘stretch’ feature. As opposed to zooming which cuts out some of the picture, stretching just gets rid of the black bars above and below the picture. On a larger screen I like keeping the native resolution, but on the small tv in my room it can actually be bothersome.

Is the stretch or zoom feature going to become available for the PS4/ios app any time soon? Thanks!

I like the update, particularly the new style episode browser. However since this update I’m having a new issue with the black bars on widescreen movies - they’re now coming up purple rather than black, which can be quite distracting. Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks!

it’s an issue we are aware of and we are working on a solution/workaround, see this thread for updates

Awesome. Apologies for not spotting that other thread!

The Updates live in Canada! (Last Night----Checked this Morning)

@miniop, @johnwr we just released a UI update which avoids crashing when navigating through large series. Bonus points on the change is that now the Episode detail view remains responsive too - no lag.

@stevensx the new player is so nice. I’ve been watching blu ray remuxes without a single hitch. Swoon. Allowing users to change the aspect ratio of the video is something we’ve filed as a feature request. I’ve added a link to your post in the feature request.

Updated the Playstation 4 Plex App yesterday. Media browsing is working but movie playback is not - it times out. Playback on Android & web app works great. Any ideas?

“There was a problem playing this item.
The video did not start playing in time.”

Plex version: 1.01
Plex Version: 0.9.16.6 on Ubuntu 14.04

Hi @Brona please open a new thread. This post has some useful information to help us debug: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/195799/troubles-read-here-to-learn-how-to-provide-great-logs#latest. Thanks!

Yes, confirmed!
Still occational crashes when browsing around. But much, much better, and not at all consistent crashes.

Great job, quickly fixing something that has bugged me for months. Thank you.

Will this eventually lead to local rendering of subtitles so I don’t have to rely on my server? I’m using a NAS and it’d be super to have the PS4 be able to render subtitles.

That’s definitely our goal, but we haven’t been able to do any device testing yet, so it might or might not be possible on PS3/PS4.

Just popping my head into the thread to say THANK YOU to the devs :relaxed:

I had started getting a bit frustrated with the state of the PS4 app, however, the new update is incredible.

Specifically, the increased responsiveness is insane - the app flies now. Not just navigation and click to play time, but the lag between scrubbing the timeline and the video catching up has been reduced drastically.

The redesign of the season page is also a million times better both practically and aesthetically.

Really happy with the direction it’s taking, so again, thank you!

While I’m here, I’ll add a big +1 to the request for native subtitle support. Having my Plex server on a NAS with a crappy CPU makes direct play/stream absolutely critical. If I need to transcode a file for subs, it pretty much means I can’t play it at all.

PS4 updated Plex to version 1.01 today and since I got ‘Plex is unable to start due to an error’ .

The reset button I push but nothing happends, help me out please
