Is there a way to have TV specials in the correct order?

I have all of my TV shows on a hard drive, connected to my HTPC, which is where my Plex server is. I’ve been going through and making sure everything is named correctly for Plex, but when I’m watching a show on my HTPC I watch through VLC, not plex, so the naming of TV specials is throwing everything out of order.

Is there a way I can name my specials so that they show up on plex correctly, while at the same time they’re in the correct season/file order on my PC?

Thanks

No, you can not have both.

You can name them correctly on your computer BUT plex will be out of whack. You cannot squeeze special episodes between regular episodes.
For Plex to understand what you have, you will have to keep all special episodes in the specials folder.

I’m new to Plex, so I obviously don’t know a lot. But I thought I’d seen an absolute order plug-in. Would something like that allow for one order convention but two different interpretations? That said, I’ve noted not every series in TVDB has an absolute order. Overwhelmingly, it’s Aired and DVD order.

As long as both your regular episodes and your special episodes have an ‘Originally Aired’ date set, the right special episode will appear in your OnDeck when it’s due.

For instance, this special episode of Daria will appear right after S04E13 and before S05E01 - just as it’s supposed to:

What the s$!t!? I just tried on my Roku. I played the last 2 minutes of s04e13. It tried to autoplay s05e01, and not s00e03.

BUT here is the kick in the face, when I canceled the autoplay and went back to the home screen… Guess what I found On Deck, s00e03. So it will sort the deck correctly but not the autoplay.

Precisely.
Therefore: Binge-ing is a no no.

Well, that’s annoying has hell. hit home after every play

Well that’s incredibly annoying. I use VLC more than Plex, so it looks like Plex will just have to be out of whack.

Interesting that On Deck does it but, not auto play. It should be the same! For me it’s not a huge deal for Battlestar Galactica (https://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=73545&seasonid=27825&lid=7) since I have 3 specials - the 2 part mini-series that goes before Season 1 Episode 1, Razor before season 4 (which my box set as put in one video instead of 2 like originally aired) and an extended unaired version of daybreak the last episode.

This also only works if the watch order is equal to the relase order right? When specials are of a prequel kind this does not work right?

It will only work if the release date is correct(or the way you want them to be by modifying the Originally Available date within plex.)

This all stems from the idiotic way that specials are handled through TVDB. People have been asking them literally for years to loosen up about specials or come up with a better way but they refuse. And in most cases specials aren’t even updated at all. It’s a madhouse.

My answer its to create a playlist, which is pretty easy in Plex. That way you can watch what you want in the order you want and it keeps track of it.

It may be a pain but if you are planning to watch all of BSG then its really just 10 minutes out of all that time.

But it would be great if these developers could get together with the data providers, ie TVDB, IMDB etc and get these issues cleaned up. home run media servers are not going away. And since streaming seems hell bent on recreating the cable industry debacles of the past 20 years, they are only going to become more popular if we can make them easier to use.
